I think UT is waiting to make sure they don't get Bowl-eligible, because they won't have to pay him as much (clause in the contract).

You might as well keep him till the end of the season and fire him as soon as its over. An interim HC isn't likely to do any better and you can spend the next month or so looking for his replacement.
