Heupel has some proving to do for me

He proved he is a very good coach last year. No doubt about it. We will see if he can take it to the next level. I feel like Richt was very similar - offensive whiz, good guy. People liked him. But he said fock that when it came time to recruit OL and DB. Even so, a bounce or two in his favor and he has at least one and maybe two NCs. I can see Heupel enjoying the same type of career.

Did Mark Richt arrive at a UGA program with 37 scholarship players and win the division in his first year?

Man, ain't that the truth. He placed a lot of emphasis on recruiting key positions, but the lines were not one of them.

I kind of get those vibes from Josh Heupel.

Heupel is likable much like Richt. But that team last year was a bunch of scrubs talent wise. They did NOT play down.

63 points to SCar with a playoff spot on the line isn't playing down?

That A&M game was a head scratcher. To lose is one thing but they had zero answers for anything A&M was doing.
That game & the arky game were byproducts of our depleted roster. The team was simply running on fumes after bama due to the lack of depth. By season's end, I believe Mekhi Wingo (DL) had played the most snaps in the country. You saw in the bowl game what we were capable of when rested. I know it was just Purdue, but we still looked like an entirely different team.

I think we had 39 scholarship players when Kelly first arrived. That gives you an idea of just how depleted we were.

No.

He arrived as a first time head coach and took UGA to their first SEC championship in the divisional era in his second year, on his way to a #3 final ranking in the polls.

It would be an upset if Brian Kelly doesn’t win the Natty at LSU. The previous 2 coaches before him won one each and they’re not great coaches.

They lost by 35 to a team playing out of their mind and also using an offense they hadn't called all year while a bad defense tried to play without their leader and failed miserably. We also lost the starting QB who'd have been in NYC if not for getting hurt that game. And that SC team also beat Clemson with that new offense.

They got beat and probably overlooked SC. But one game for a team coming 3 win and 7 win seasons? No. Keep your manipulative shite to yourself. Teams lose games like this when they're coming off 3 and 7 win seasons and learning how to compete.

Nope. We played up all year. Our roster wasn't that talented. Almost everyone we played had more talent, including Florida.

A bit simplistic thinking.

The reality is that until very recently, there was a single juggernaut and several other very good teams in college football. Bama and a group of teams that changed some but often contained OU, Clemson, LSU, OSU and others on occasion.

Now, we have two juggernaut or near juggernaut teams (UGA and Bama both qualify in my book).

The only time we really had that before the last couple of seasons were a few of the Urban Meyer at UF years.

Will it stay that way for a long time? Possibly not. UGA could regress to the pack and Saban could retire to cause Bama to do the same. But I think you're looking at 3-4 seasons of having to topple two giants rather than one for anyone else to win a title.

That's harder than just getting past one. Even harder if you're in the same conference because then you have to potentially do it 3 times going forward. Hell, neither Kirby nor Saban has beaten the other twice in a season to win a title.

The biggest issue with Kelly is age. He's nearing the end of his career, and if the first 5 seasons he has at LSU are against a handicap that the prior coaches didn't have to deal with, it's very possible he be a better coach but have worse results.
