There are plenty of good restaurants in Colquitt you just have to know where to go.

Buddy let the program fall behind by about 40 years. Vestavia people still think it is 1985.

Buddy Anderson ain't around no more?
No, Buddy Anderson retired from Vestavia last season (2020).
Sean Calhoun took over for Anderson this season (2021). He was formerly an OC at Colquitt County.
Apparently now Calhoun is headed back to Colquitt, and Vestavia is looking for another coach—as is Hoover after Josh Niblett recently left for Gainesville (Georgia).
Thompson also has an indoor practice facility, BTW.

He is/was certainly venerated, but you're correct.
Old-school in every way, to a fault.
For example, at Vestavia he used to do this thing during big games where his team would come out for warmups, then go in the locker room right before kickoff and come out “unexpectedly” with alternate jerseys.
The players and crowd would whip into a frenzy, and then after the opening kickoff they’d proceed to get their asses kicked anyway, because they ran outdated concepts.
Probably a great guy, but a lot of people thought he was a curmudgeon and wayyy past his prime to coach as long as he did.

Thompson's is only 50 yards. Colquitt is 110 yards.

If this is gonna be the overthemountainrant, then:
Who do you think Hoover is looking at?
What do you think about Spain Park’s new coach that moved over from Jackson-Olin?

All of this is true. He is a decent man, but his coaching philosophy was well behind the times.

Nobody else is probably reading this, so I'll give you a Rush Propst/Buddy Anderson story to bring this full circle.
Vestavia are the Rebels, and especially for big games, a long time ago fans would line up and wave rebel flags against the opposing team's bus when they arrived.
When Rush was at Hoover he saw this riding in one year, and without being too specific on what he actually said, he told the players something along the lines of, "Do you see that? They think y'all are a bunch of trash. They are calling our black players so-and-so."
One of the Hoover players took this very personally, and proceeded to single-handedly whip Vestavia's arse in what would ultimately be a career game for that kid.
So yeah, Buddy being stuck in his ways really didn't do himself too many favors, even back then.

Vestavia used those rebels flags up till about 8 years ago. Very old school mindset in Vestavia.

Heck some of the kids still ride around flying one on game days from their jacked up trucks. Even saw one on a pole coming out of the drivers window of an old busted looking Mustang a few years ago. I live here now, but didn't grow up here, and for several years there have been talks of changing the mascot. All the old people were in an uproar on the facebook about it. I don't care, change it or not, but it is entertaining to read when the topic comes up.

We had Central-Phenix City in our area and their coach Wayne Trawick ran the Wing-T. Similar drubbings back then. Central was probably the best in our Area of Auburn, Opelika, Central and Valley. My junior year was the first time Auburn High had ever made the playoffs, IIRC. Now the population is growing so fast AHS is pretty salty every year.

Vestavia Hills' facilities are pretty good, but they can't compete with what Hoover and Thompson "offer."
I played for Tuscaloosa County and the difference in what we had in the late 90’s facility wise, compared to now is unbelievable. Of course back then we were defending state champions and Hoover was a homecoming opponent. Then Rush left Alma Bryant and turned Hoover into a super power. County High is probably Hoover’s homecoming game now. Unfortunately.

Yep, remember it well—think it was Coach Reed. Most confusing offensive scheme I've ever seen.
People casually watching a game have no idea how hard it is for a player on the field to actually find the ball against a concept like that, especially when you don't practice against it often.

Robert Higginbotham, aka Coach Higg?
Or he may have been right after you, can't remember when he left Shades Valley.
Anyway, his brother Steve played for Alabama in the early 70s, I think.
