UT fans trying to say they are the better program, are the same as the couple Bama fans trying to say they are better historically than LSU in baseball and basketball.

Memphis has 16 more NCAA tournament wins.
Is that gross total...or total after removing those vacated?

True, but human beings measure things by tangible markers. Total wins. Championships. Progression through the tournament. This is just how it’s done.
This isn’t a measure of a coach or a program this second or this season. It’s a measure of a program’s strength and consistency over time.

Doesn’t include vacated wins.

Tough call, but I'd pick Memphis because they're better during tourney time

Better program all together? Tennessee hands down.
Hotter program for now? Memphis.
Pio, you should know better.

Banners != trophy. Imagine getting a trophy for 4th place.

UT has more conference titles than Memphis and they play in an absolute shite conference. UT would be as successful or more in the tournament if they didn’t play in the same conference as Kentucky. Several of our best teams around the Ray Mears era didn’t make the tournament due to 1 team per conference and had to beat out the #1 basketball program in the country for that spot. Educate yourself.

Same would I guess hold true for Memphis had they not spent years in the same conference as Louisville...

You love stirring it up between Tennessee and Memphis State.

ESPN panel asked which program you would rather buy stock in moving forward
3/4 picked VOLS over Memphis

John Gasaway, college basketball writer: I'm recommending to my investors that they dedicate a small portion of their portfolios to Tennessee

Jeff Borzello, college basketball insider: Long-term, I think the answer has to be Tennessee. Memphis has more pop in the short term, but we're already seeing that even with the nation's top-ranked recruiting class, the Tigers are still not clearly better than the Volunteers. And Memphis is not going to land the No. 1 class in 2020 (although Hardaway is still in the mix for multiple elite prospects). The reason I would go with Tennessee long-term is something John alluded to. If Hardaway and Barnes both left tomorrow, chances are Tennessee is getting the better coach.
