1977 Alabama vs Notre Dame
Both teams finished 11-1; they lost both games in their second games of the season. Alabama lost by one score to Nebraska on the road; Notre Dame, on the other hand, lost to Ole Miss (a team Alabama would beat later in the season).
A wild bowl season that year as well, as prior to the bowls, it was:
#1 Texas
#2 Oklahoma
#3 Alabama
#4 Michigan
#5 Notre Dame
#1 Texas lost to #5 Notre Dame
#2 Oklahoma lost to #6 Arkansas
#3 Alabama beat #9 Ohio State
#4 Michigan lost to #13 Washington
In fact, only the Rose Bowl was close. Notre Dame crushed Texas, Arkansas demolished Oklahoma, and Alabama obliterated Ohio State.
Notre Dame leapfrogged Alabama to end up #1.
