What was different is that offenses weren't very good compared to today. (Talking about the 1960s) Now days teams who aren't very good are still dangerous. Not so in the olden days.

I do agree that offensive innovation has made teams with lesser talent (but maybe a good QB) more capable of pulling upsets.

It’s hard to stand toe to toe with a more talented team and beat them running the I or some shite.

So, the Bear deserves more credit for wins, as he got his in an era of less games per year, and certainly less “cupcake” type games

Bryant also has more losses in an era of less games per year…..and that was before you were finishing the season against 2-3 high quality opponents in the SEC Championship Game, BCS or CFP. And overall, the SEC wasn’t nearly as strong a conference. Saban’s record at Bama wouldn’t be much different if you replaced cupcakes with all P-5 opponents. So Bama wins those games by 20 points instead of 50.

Outside of those Two and Gibba, that team was absolute dog shite. How they won 11 games was incredible.

They tied with Georgia for most players drafted (10)…

1) which has "claimed" vs earned and WON National Championships??

2) which one was a racist, but only let black kids play so that he could win?

Answer those 2 questions and I'll pick a coach.

the Bear

Nick is great by the numbers but Bear was old school having to coach with so much anti SEC national media bias during his coaching career. Not saying he was a great person to be around in real life and personal life but I do know personally some of the young men he shaped into being better men off the field of play.

While this may not show up in the stats, it has great value to me.

Bryant didn’t have success anywhere else.

Umm...what?

He almost won national championships at both Kentucky and Texas A&M prior to coming to Alabama. Up until last year or the year before, Bryant was still Kentucky's all-time winningest head coach.

Boomers will cry Bryant but it isn't even close. Saban has done more in an era where it's much more difficult to win.

I am a boomer and won't cry but I am old enough to have followed both coaches and I would say it is very close.

It's kind of like comparing apples and oranges. Different eras different rules.

I keep seeing people saying Bryant would sign a bunch of kids and never play them. I'm not so sure about that. He'd play a hell of a lot of people. Two and sometimes three QB's in the Wishbone days. 70 plus players on a participation chart. And In crunch time against good teams.

anyone saying “..and it’s not close” is way off

It’s very close, but right now I’m going Bear

Winning at Kentucky and aTm pushes him just over for me…

If the CFP or BCS existed during Bryant’s days at Alabama would have made the playoffs in

61, 62,63,64,65,66, 71, 72,73,74,75,77,78,79

His best Kentucky team would have been in as well.

Saban has a split title at LSU.. that he would not have won in the Poll era..

Nor would have he won the title in 2011, 2018 .

Even in 2012 , ND was undefeated and had they not had to play Bama in a bowl game, they would have been awarded the NC in a poll era.
