Some people were calling it a homerun hire. A lot of bama fans and usc fans were on that bandwagon. A lot of AU fans had their problems with him after talking to USM fans. But he wasn't Gus's first choice like you stated.

This. I literally don't remember reading a single Auburn person being upset about hiring Johnson. Everyone was excited. Any negatives from USM were thrown out as "head coach issues".
