A little off subject, but one example I know is Bama had the luxury of playing Vanderbilt from 1917 thru 2002 until the SEC finally made teams only have 1 East divisional rivalry game. Auburn was forced to play Florida every year.
A little off subject? How about completely out of left field. But yea, Tennessee was great and Florida pretty much sucked til Spurrier got there. And isn't Auburn right around a .500 team against Vandy?

Florida was the team of the 90s in the SEC.
Even if I give you the entire decade, Tennessee was still a far superior program on a yearly basis during that time period that you described. That didn't change until Spurrier took over.
You "were forced" to play Florida every year... while we played a much, much, much better Tennessee team for 70+ yeaers.

UT for me, but i'm < 40.
I have no love for AU at all, but I fricking hate UT from the bottom of my heart.

Yes they are, but they didn't have the luxury of playing them 85 straight years like Alabama.
Auburn and Alabama both have the same amount of losses to Vanderbilt.

Auburn played Florida and Georgia. Alabama played Vandy and Tennessee.

As a matter of fact, Florida didn't win 10 games in one year until 1991 under Spurrier.
Florida has had THREE winless seasons and not a single undefeated season.

This whole "there's still a respect there between UA and UT" is absolute horseshite. 10 years ago, you couldn't get on a message board without "fat phil this" or "fat phil that"..."Roy Kramer, tennstud, ncaa, fbi, etc. are all against us"...yada yada yada. It's a never ending cycle. Give it another 5 years, and Tennessee will be the devil again for Bama fans...if LSU isn't first. They have to have somebody to hate.

Our hatred towards Tennessee is based almost fully around Phil Fulmer and his posse that he had while he was at UT. As soon as Phil takes over as AD at Tennessee, that hatred will return. Until then, it has returned to a rivalry of respected teams... for me at least.

So in 85 or so games Alabama has the same amount of losses to Vandy as Auburn does in 30 or so games? Is that the point you were trying to make?

My point exactly.

:kige:
But it's never been as bad and as heated as the Auburn rivalry is now.

The rivalry is weird. It seems like one team dominates for a long time and then the other team wins a bunch.

So your point is that the only reason we hate Tennessee is because of Phil Fulmer, and as long as he's not there - the hatred will be gone?

My point is that is has become a never-ending cycle with Bama fans calling a series "toxic". 10 years ago, we heard the same thing about how Tennessee and Fulmer had ruined a good rivalry. Now, it's Auburn and Dye/Chizik/Lowder/Tigerettes/Trooper/Luper/etc. that has ruined a good rivalry.

We can't get rid of either.

UT. I'm hoping we keep them as a permanent rival.

I'm confused - are most of the Bama fans replying in this thread OK with getting rid of the Iron Bowl if Auburn moves to the East?
