This will be nothing like going into 2010 when we had 2 starters returning. We have much more talent and experience now.

The only losses that matters were RM and Kody. You are losing the NT and 2 or 3 of your starting LBs, and 3 starting DBs.

Obviously. I'm not expecting the 2012 defense to be on par with the 2011 team. I'm just saying I'm not expecting a huge drop-off.

I agree with this. We are losing some great players. We have talent and depth, but there has to be some dropoff. That is just how it is. I just hope some of our younger players do not become complacent. I have confidence that they will not, but its obviously possible.

Damn after reading through some of this thread i'm beginning to become worried. Hopefully we get our shite together next year in time for the game. We always look shittastic, I wish we didn't break in SEC play against you guys.

We also had a true freshman starting at corner in 2010 because we were so shallow. We now have a couple guys who have
a good bit of experience at the position, they've just been playing behind other stars.

There's almost certainly going to be a drop off. The 2010 defense was filled with the same players that played this year and just wasn't as good due to youthful mistakes as well as probably not being able to run as many complicated packages.

Why would next year be any different?

That said, the 2010 defense was still among the best in the country and good enough to where the only 3 losses were all games that could've gone either way with a couple of breaks.

I expect the same but hopefully without the close losses.

You're losing the big 3 at receiver right? Isn't Hamilton coming back? I know that TE is a beast.

But the reason they were not starting is because they were not as good as the ones you are losing.

Yeah Bama will definitely have a good defense, no doubt. Milliner, DePriest, Lester, and others will step up. But it will not be this year's defense, which is the best I've seen in a while, if not ever.

Of equal concern, perhaps, is the offense, which will lose Trent, the two starting TEs and the two starting WRs.

We just had one of the best defenses in college football. We're losing likely 7 of those starters.

We will see a drop off. That much is certain.

How much is really the only question left.

Not necessarily. Dre Kirkpatrick is a much better corner than a some of the guys from the 09 team, but he didn't have the experience, and they were doing a solid job without him, so he barely played outside of special teams.

Bama had only 3 Seniors in the starting 22 in 2010. Lack of leadership is what hurt us the most.

Not so fast my friend. Saban plays the experienced upperclassmen over the young superstars due to complex schemes.

We have kids like Nico Johnson, Tana Patrick, CJ Mosely and Trey Depriest that have played a lot. Upshaw will be missed but we're loaded with jack/DE guys, Pettway, Dickson, Hubbard, Pagan, Fanning that have been chomping at the bit to get their shot.

Our D'backs like Milliner, Fulton, Sunseri and Ha Ha have loads of talent. Not to mention the all-star Ju-co kids coming in.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say by the end of the year the defense is at least as good as this year.

Yea we Adams wright and Childs. We do return several very very good backups. However we always look a shellshocked for the first SEC game. Hopefully this year our lines have gelled by then. We don't lose much so should be at least a better fight than this year.

So Bama has peaked on D and it's all down from here?

Saban is the reason the defense is what it is. He has been recruiting to build the ultimate defense. He checks his roster and recruits to fill each position with the best available for his scheme. He finally has enough back to back recruiting classes to have 'experienced talent' to use on that side of the ball, at each position.

Could you please expand on you assessment.

Shoot me.

I'm going to spend the next 8 months tempering expectations.

You don't lose those kind of players and leaders and expect to just roll new ones out there that are as successful.....see 2010.

Lester coming back helps but we are going to have to replace three big regulars in the secondary with Menzie, Kirkpatrick, and Barron. We normally play three corners and two safeties.

Judging by meaningful snaps (dime package on Monday night) you would pencil Vinnie in at one safety, because the other guys (mainly Jarrick Williams and Nick Perry) can't get it.

If you are weak in the back half it hamstrings what you can do on defense.

Think back to the losses in 2010 and why we lost those games and it can usually be tracked back to the secondary.
