Yeah, Alabama never had really bad basketball.

Their horror was being stuck in a repeating loop of slightly above average NIT team into eternity.

Being a two seed with an easy path to the elite eight was pretty disappointing. That scenario isn’t easy to come by, got to take advantage of it.

I mean, I agree, but this kind of post isn't going to fly here (the fighting corndogs can't help themselves). Come over to the Bama board to discuss our basketball greatness. We have a very active season thread there, as we have for years.

It's football season in Tuscaloosa, AL and all over the south. Nothing else matters until mid January or February

Why are football only fans always so insecure about basketball?

Thanks for explaining basketball to us. As an Auburn fan, I'm sure you have as much as two years of expertise backing your teaching.

Lol. This “got you” line Bama fans parrot from Hunter L Johnson is pretty great. Remember Bruce is fat.

Most Auburn and Bama bball fans are the exact same. Ive been way too invested in terrible AU bball since I can remember. Went to almost every home game during the Barbee years. I deserve a damn medal.

Speaking of Hunter, he has a basketball call-in show now on the local Tuscaloosa radio station. It has gone about as well as you would expect.

I don't even know who that is. I've heard the name, but I don't think I've ever watched? heard? read? him. I make fun of you guys with zero help.

My point stands. Bama fans and Wimp Sanderson don't need anyone to explain the importance of seeding to us.

Uh, yeah a lot of Bama fans probably do. The Bama fans I grew up with in Birmingham could give a damn about basketball. Even under those solid Gottfried teams. I think more Auburn and Bama fans are getting into it because 1) of course, the product has improved and 2) basketball has just grown in popularity as a sport itself.

Alright, you seem more reasonable than I assumed.

It's also possible that I skimmed your post and thought you were being condescending when you weren't actually. But, that would make ME the problem and I don't know if that's something we want to consider. It's Friday, after all.

I do think Alabama has a pretty large basketball fan base left over from the 70's, 80's, and the better gottfried years. But, yeah, there's definitely a lot of new young fans that are beginning to pay attention for the first time.

I was talking to this old Bama fan on Tuesday morning, I asked if he was ready for basketball season to start that evening and it totally shifted the entire mood of the interaction, dude acted all offended that I'd even bring up basketball

He said "NOPE! I only watch football, drag racing, NASCAR, and sometimes baseball but only the Braves. We don't watch no basketball in this house!" Said it with a scowl on his face and a tone of voice like I just asked him if he wanted to sell me his wife

We've been horrendous like 3 times in the last 30 years. That's the most frustrating part of it. We're almost never terrible, just mediocre enough to make you think maybe we are good or close to being good.

You probably already know this, but we call them FOGs–“football-only Gumps.”

Like you with Auburn basketball, a bunch of us have been around for a long time, and remember that darkness all too well.

These last few years have been amazing, but trust me, we’re still used to the pain.

Did you lowball the offer on his wife? May have been a contributing factor.

They actually have been college HCs about the same amount of time, as Oats was teaching HS and coaching there for 11 yrs. That said, Oats has done equal or better in less time as a college HC

GeneralWade: (38 yrs old; pear shaped):
-HC at 3x colleges (2013-present; entering 5th yr at LSU)
Overall: 175–85 (.673)
Tournaments:

-1–1 (NIT)
-0–1 (CIT)
Championships
- Atlantic 10 regular season (2016)
- SEC regular season (2019)
Awards
- SoCon Coach of the Year (2014)

Oats: 47 yrs old; not pear shaped:
-HC at 2x colleges (2015-present; entering 3rd yr at Bama)
Overall:

*(wouldn't be a Bama post without an asterisk): Plus, 11 yrs teaching HS and coaching with a 222–52 record (.810 win%), 5x state semis, and 1x state championship.

It's supposedly on the table. Prior plans were to renovate Coleman again, but now there's talk of a new arena. Coleman is around 15k now. I'm torn on if a new one should be that big. Demand is certainly there for the big games.

I don’t think it should be, personally.

You get 10k-12k in Coleman now and it still seems way too sparse.

I miss the “move down” days, where you could at least fill up the lower sections.

Regardless of size though, the seating needs to be totally reconfigured.

We damn near sold out the arena for a Tuesday night, season opening game with an 8 o'clock tipoff. I grew up with season tickets during the Wimp years, and that NEVER happened. Large crowds weren't happening until the SEC schedule started after the football season was over. The lone exception to that may have been the UNC game in 90 or 91, but I forget what month that was played. We beat their arse is all I remember.
