Obviously Alabama is the benchmark, but that doesn't make Auburn feel a whole lot better.

Because right now Auburn is averaging 5 losses a year since 2013, an we just played for the National Championship. The Recruiting class plays a role, obviously, though.
We will have to wait and see for a couple more years, to see if we have fools gold or the real deal. But I don't think it is too far off base to say we are closer to the top than Auburn right now. Could it change? Yes. But Gus has been at Auburn for 5 years. We have a pretty good idea of what he is and what he can do. Is he capable? yes. But after 4 comparatively lackluster seasons, he needs to show that 2013 was not a fluke.

I wouldn't call 2017 a lackluster year for Auburn. Especially considering 10 win seasons seem to be the only benchmark for success on the Rant.
3 of our 4 losses were to two playoff teams and the eventual national champ (and beat one of those 3 weeks prior)
The only difference I see between the two this year is the difficulty of the schedule. UGA had a better signing class in 2018, but it's not like Auburn finished in the 30s.
