Is it the large number of trailers or the catfish ponds and chicken houses scattered around campus that give you that feeling?

I just love when people of the great "Metropolis" that is Tuscaloosa, AL make fun of that small farm town of Auburn, AL

AU has a higher acceptance rate, for what it matters. If I was interested in engineering or agriculture or veterinary medicine, AU is definitely the best school in the state.

Law, nursing, business, liberal arts, probably no.

I'll never understand why Alabama fans think Tuscaloosa is superior to Auburn.

I keep waiting to see that shithole of a town pop up on one of these, but it never seems to happen...

Did I say that? Of course not. I think AU is a nice place.

It is ridiculous to say it doesn't feel like greater Alabama though. That place is a hick town.

Wasn't it you that said you didn't feel like AU was a part of Alabama? That's laughable, and I pointed out why.

It is the prototypical Alabama town.

As a guy that's lived there, nothing.

As for the higher exceptance rate, when you're attracting engineering students and pulling more students nationally, you're gonna have a higher rate.

Also, on average, auburn grads have higher salaries... part of the reason is we tend to spread out across the country than bama grads (and also the engineering).

That makes no sense, but then again I didn't go to Auburn.

It has nothing to do with your spreading out. AU graduates a large number of engineers, who typically make more than other graduates, regardless of school. The only 'spreading out' AU grads do en masse is when all the Georgia kids move back to Georgia. Why you people must perpetuate this myth is beyond me... all SEC schools have thousands and thousands of graduates living in other states; AU is not special.

That alone explains why State's incoming freshmen average ACT score is typically higher than Ole Miss'.

It was me because everyone I meet at Auburn is from Georgia or Texas

no one's said it was... the original question was regarding national reputation. Auburn attracts more students from outside the state of Alabama than Univ. of Alabama does while have more stringent requirements.... these are facts. That's not to say there aren't a lot of UAT graduates living throughout the country, but that wasn't the question.

Here are the top 5 states of origin (non Alabama) for UA and AU freshmen for fall of 2009:

UA

Georgia: 472
Florida: 263
Texas: 245
Tennessee: 209
Virginia: 113

AU

Georgia: 671
Florida: 248
Tennessee: 159
Texas: 117
Virginia: 64

The top 5 is the same for each school, and the only state that AU enrolls more from is Georgia, and that has more to do with being right on the line than being 'national'.
