According to the AL.com article I just read, it said that Chizik said we were giving one-year scholarships, but an athletic department spokesperson later went back and said that we were giving multi-year ones.

No, they didn't.

However the 4 years is more of a moral agreement. Per NCAA scholarships are renewed every year

So, if you leave the team for whatever reason, but stay at Auburn and don't get in trouble plus keep the grade requirement, you'll still get the full ride? Is that right?

If you leave the team you cannot have an athletic scholarship. Auburn just said they would not take away a scholarship for performance reasons. However they cannot offer a four year scholarship to sign, only a one year to be renewed yearly. they can only say we will honor it as a four year, but it is still a verbal contract with nothing to back it except morals.

Gotcha.

I think this is false, and if true will they also give every one on the team the same deal in July when papers are signed?
Tony Barbee is specifically who I was referring to in my original post. Oversigned by almost 30% last year and is already oversigned this year.

So then why are the AU fans and this reporter bitching about this when in fact the reporter and fans are admitting that they have no idea when Philon was warned that he might have to greyshirt?
I think it's a good football decision by Saban but that doesn't mean that you can't have moral qualms about it.
And from reading the post it seems that feeling extends beyond auburn fans and to some bama fans. Now naturally some of your shitty posters (beer Bryant and the like) would rather just say "you mad" than address the issue. I hope you can see that while a good football decision it might not be what you would call the right decision. If you disagree that's your prerogative but do consider that this issue isn't just sour grapes.
Hats off to bona fied for using some objectivity.

So they didn't really MEAN it was a four year deal. They just promised it was when its really still a typical, renewable every year, scholarship.
When has Saban taken away a scholarship for "performance reasons"...?
This move is nothing but PR window dressing by Auburn.

Darius Philon is a POS. He decommitted from Auburn and trusted Saban. Now his arse is having to go to a school 12 hours away. He got served
I agree, but who did UA give his and Justin Taylor's scholly to?

It is a PR move, but if they honor it then you can't say its just window dressing. we shall see in 4 years

I think this is false,
You are correct. Auburn is not giving their new signee's 4 year scholly's. They are giving them 5 yr scholly's.

An athletics department spokesman later clarified that Auburn provided five-year scholarships.
So my apologies to all you bama fans. I was wrong about the 4 year scholarships.
Posted on 2/2/12 at 10:29 am to AUtigR24
So is Auburn only doing verbal because the NCAA doesn't allow 4 year scholarships? If so, what are all the Big Ten schools doing, just verbal 4 year deals too?

I have a hard time believing that the guy was absolutely blindsided by the news that he was gonna get a greyshirt offer.
The ESPN reporter on Bama's campus said that she was shown by an Alabama staff member the list of who they expected to sign the first thing that morning, and at the end of the day the class was EXACTLY as drawn up on the list. Coupled with saban's prior statements that they have a plan for every single person they recruit, and that plan is clearly enunciated to the players and their families, and knowing how meticulous Saban is about details, I just feel like it had to have been known.
He might not have thought it was really going to happen, and was obviously crushed about getting bumped, but its a numbers game...

So what makes you think the Auburn staff won't do the same? I mean, other than homerific ideals about how its all about family?
Whats binding about any of this?
