Agree...but it isn't tough to NOT kick him in the effing head when he is on the ground. You've won at that point. Walk away then and it's a non issue.

At this point it crosses the line of self-defense and becomes assault.

I'm sure the players could have walked away before the guy threw a punch.

I agree. Just saying sometimes you can't walk away if you aren't the instigator. This does NOT mean he should have been kicked in the head.
The curfew thing is not an issue BTW....team tradition on last day of camp. Coaches are aware of this.

I got sucker punched in a parking lot before outside a McDonalds in high school. I never even saw the guy who threw the punch.

Last day of camp, the coaches set a 10:30 pm curfew. Players break it every year and the coaches are aware of this.
Last weekend of not having school and no practice the next day. The curfew is a nonissue. The fighting is not.
