I'd say this is a pretty big assumption. An incorrect assumption if you listen to any player (or his parents) that Saban recruits. They all say that he never promises them anything and he shoots straight with them.

To use Alabama's history prior to Saban to implicate Saban as being a part of the problem is intellectually dishonest. He's done more to clean up Alabama's program more than anyone in the last decade or more. If one were to cite the textbook case as happening during his tenure, they would be incorrect in laying the blame at his feet. It was his administration that caught the mistake that was going on prior to his arrival. He did everything the right way in that case.

I've never heard one complaint from any athlete that left our program. On the contrary, they all speak rather highly of him and the staff after they leave. Star Jackson is the most recent example.

All of those moves were perfectly logical and none of them could be construed as him being unloyal. Did he handle the Miami thing correctly, no. He's admitted as much. But for people to continue to use Saban's moves as some sort of evidence for him being unloyal is intellectually dishonest because they all make sense in terms of what he was trying to do with his career at those points.


The reason this article is shitty is because his logic and assumptions are incorrect when held up to scrutiny. They are gross exaggerations and mischaracterizations of the truth based on what is popular to think of Saban within the media. I would have much more respect for the guy's opinion if he just said that Saban shouldn't be putting down agents because he basically does the same thing with college athletes (i.e. uses their ability to enhance his career, reputation, etc.). But even that doesn't hold up under close examination because at least Saban teaches these young men the right way to do things. But the point could still be argued with the conclusion that Saban is just as much of a pimp as these agents. Any coach is.

Is he a hypocrite sometimes? Yep. The whole LeBron James comments were pretty ridiculous given the way he handled leaving the Miami job. If you want to be critical, I guess you could use this.

The point of the matter is a call to hold the agents to the same level we hold our players to. The whole checks and balances of the system is screwed up. That doesn't sell newspapers though, so let's attack Saban and his quote about pimps.
