Florida playing Tulane in their bowl game has me thinking about old SEC matchups and who the big 6/8/10 schools were back then.
Tulane is in New Orleans
LSU is in Baton Rouge
Who would the "big dawg" be in the state of Louisiana? LSU basically has no competition for big-time recruits within the state.
before Tulane left, the series was 39-18-6 LSU (i think) from 1893-1965. they left in june of '66.
now, it's 70-22-6 LSU.

Tulane and Florida had been in the same conference from 1896-1965. In that span the series was 7-6-2 in Floridas favor. Since they left Florida has won 6 straight
Tulane leaving the SEC might be the worst decision a football program has ever made. Georgia tech is still at least kicking at the P4 level and Suwanee doesn’t care about football, they only care about acting rich on their supervillain mountain lair. Tulane does try at football, they do somewhat care. Them leaving put their program on a much lower level than they were prior. They still have more sec titles than 9 SEC members. They are only surpassed by the big 7 of Bama Florida Tenn Georgia LSU Ole Miss Auburn and then Georgia Tech. Tulane was primed and ready to be up there with the SEC teams that actually win shite and they threw it away. Hell based on their programs prestige and history they probably would’ve just taken LSUs place in the big 7. Louisiana boys love to stay home, and if Tulane had foundational SEC pull then those boys go to them over LSU any day
Sometimes you bet on the wrong horses. Let’s teach em a lesson in history

Tulane would be Vandysh. The difference is the fanbase is more engaged in the athletics and maybe better recruiting appeal.

This is correct.

LSU had won 24 in a row against Tulane when Tulane finally broke that losing streak in 1973. Since WWII Tulane has beaten LSU five times. There is no historical precedent to support the notion that Tulane would have supplanted LSU.
The mistake of leaving the conference was compounded ten years later when Tulane started playing home games in the Superdome and then tore down the real Tulane Stadium. Tulane's new stadium is too small for SEC contests. I went to the Ole Miss game and it was so tight in the concourse it didn't feel safe.
