I don't think anyone said he was not a loss but to say it is a huge loss is not the case. losing Jackson/Arenas is probably more of a loss.

I guess you could say that, but we will have to wait til next year to truly find out.

Do you know that chick in your avatar? That's a bad arse pic.

We will have a ton of raw DB talent and the best DB coach in the business. We shouldn't fall off too much.

Look at the depth, look at the athletes, that Saban has recruited.

Fine, yes. NC-caliber, probably not. You don't lose 6 senior starters from your front 7, along with a couple of DBs on top of that, and not experience some kind of a dropoff.

Exactly. The only way we can tell is by their on the field play next year. Any talk right now is just pure speculation.

The talk from the SEC Rant experts before the season was that Mcelroy sucked and would cost Alabama games because he could not beat out JPW.

Theoretically, you're absolutely right. But football isn't played in theory, it's played in reality. As someone said earlier, most people thought that with two All-American o-linemen leaving, our veteran starting QB leaving, and our leading rusher leaving, that our offense was going to be a shell of its 2008 self. Instead, our offense was better in almost every category this year.

Rolando McClain was a very good player in 2008. But he wasn't anywhere near as good as he was this past year. Kareem Jackson was a slightly above average corner in 2008 (many of you probably remember him getting burned all over the field in the Sugar Bowl). He improved drastically in 2009. We've had several defensive players that have tons of potential that can definitely improve a LOT during the offseason. Lots of players have playing time, even if they didn't start.

So, yes, theoretically there should be a drop off on defense next season. But we have the best defensive mind in college football on the sidelines to minimize that drop off.

All I'm saying is, while it may seem improbable (or even impossible to some of you), this defense COULD end up being nearly as good as the 2009 team.

He tried his best JPW would have had roughly the same success if he was on a team as strong as this years fwiw

Gmac throws the deep ball very-very nicely though

You're right. But how much of a drop-off and how much improvement or lack thereof in the opposition will determine where Bama ends up next year.

Bama probably won't be as good on the run stopping. But it looks like the pass-rush will be improved so we'll see how it all works out. I'm hoping Ivory will be able to contribute early and help spell Murphy and Chapman, both of which are great NGs. McClain and Cody are the biggest holes to fill IMO, and as long as Hightower and the various NGs that are left are willing to put in the work to fill in the gaps, I think the defense will recover just fine.

IMO 2010 is just a likely to be an NC run with the changes other SEC teams are going through.

The loss to our defensive line isn't as bad as you make it out. While we do lose a lot on the defensive line, we return a lot. The back-ups coming in to replace them have loads of in-game experience because we rotated them in and out. Josh Chapman, Terrence Cody's back-up, is stronger than Cody was. You also have Marcell Dareus and Damion Square on the defensive ends. We all know how good Dareus is and Square was pretty damn good himself until he injured his ACL.

At linebacker, while losing McClain, we are loaded with talent that has quite a bit of game experience. Jerrell Harris should finally make an impact, Courtney Upshaw is back, and so is Nico Johnson. And then of course you have Dont'A Hightower who is probably more talented than McClain. He's definitely faster. Whether or not he can lead the defense as well as McClain did is yet to be seen.

The only area of real worry is defensive back. Robby Green and Mark Barron are two outstanding safeties but the corners that will be playing around them are pretty green. Menzie will probably be able to come in and offset Jackson leaving early for the NFL. Other than that, we're just going to have to rely on raw talent and Saban's coaching ability to get the secondary ready for 2010.

He may not have been here to see it for himself but he is 100% correct. The mantra was that Bama wouldn't do shite for lack of horses on the OL and a new QB. Ironically when our RB won the Heisman Trophy we were told that anyone could have run behind our OL. Hypocrisy is an art form on the Rant.
