Of course, you couldn't ask for a prettier day than today. Sun is out and its only around 70 with no stifling humidity.
I was thinking about that an hour ago when I walked outside. Crazy.
Sitting around waiting last night to hear from my mom in Ttown was pretty frightening. She lives in Cottondale, just north of Ttown, and when I heard the Alberta City EMA was hit, it was hard to not think the worst.
Finally got a text about 9pm saying there were trees down, etc but they were fine.

Thank the good lord.
Those without power and those clearing debris today. Should remain like this through the weekend.

I remember the same thing after Ivan. Trees and power down everywhere, but an amazingly beatiful day.

My gf works at the university and since they had no power, her and the women at the office were going to the volunteer station to help with anything that they could.
meanwhile, we have sold every portable generator in our building and have had to make an emergency purchase of about 50 (as of 10 minutes ago). We normally only stock about 6-8 at any given time. We've also made emergency wire orders of around 15-20K feet of wire. We have definitely stayed busy. They pulled me out of my office to help up front earlier and I had two sorority girls come in and buy about 30 pairs of work gloves (cleaned us out) so it seems that there are a lot of people helping with cleanups and also people trying to get power established.

Ya me too. Last thing I want is to be involved in a scam.

Students will have the option of accepting their existing grades as of April 27, 2011, or they can take a final exam at a later date. For those students who request to take a final exam, faculty will have the option of scheduling the final exam on site when normal operations resume or via distance education means.
This schedule change includes all enrolled students except those in the School of Law and School of Medicine. Their academic calendars vary and they should be in touch with their faculty for confirmation of their exam schedule.

They are reporting that 147 are dead in Franklin County Alabama just by itself. The law enforcement announced it a little while ago.

From James Spann's Weather Blog:
I was in downtown Tuscaloosa when the tornado came through. It was the most awe-inspiring and terrifying sight I have ever witnessed. As an aspiring amateur storm chaser, this was my first ever tornado. It's a shame it had to be one that caused so much destruction and loss of life.
I'm probably going to try to join the volunteer relief effort later today or tomorrow.

My long time associate and ABC 33/40 Chief Photographer Bill Castle just landed from flying the track of the Tuscaloosa/Birmingham tornado. He has seen it all over the years, and just told me this looked much worse that the April 8, 1998 EF-5 along the path. The tornado never lifted along the path he flew from Tuscaloosa to Fultondale. Site built homes totally off the foundation, massive timber damage in East Tuscaloosa County. No doubt in his mind this will be rather EF-4 or EF-5. And, remember, the track actually started in Mississippi and continued into Georgia after causing more severe damage in Northeast Alabama near Piedmont.

In addition to financial aid, there is currently a shortage of blood due to the number of injured requiring surgeries/transfusions. Currently scheduled (non tornado related) surgeries are being canceled.
To donate blood, you can visit the lifesouth.org or the redcrossblood.org websites to search for a donation center.
Alabama Lost and Found on Facebook, to search for missing friends/relatives.

Hey Guys.
I haven't posted here very often, mostly during the Cam Newton saga, but I do check in on the Rant almost every day.
I live just south of Birmingham, but grew up in the city limits. We were under two tornado warnings at my house last night, within about 45 minutes. The first one was the scariest, with the power flickering on and off the whole time. Was in the hallway with the wife and kids, watching Spann on the laptop.
What happened in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham last night was beyond anything I ever imagined when the situation started to develop at the beginning of the week. I got home in time to see the storm come through both towns on television. I thought it was big in T-Town, but it was a monster when it approached downtown Birmingham. The pictures, videos, and seeing stuff first hand is gut wrenching and humbling.
I work in the Avondale/Forest Park area of Birmingham, and we have insulation all over our parking lot today. From who knows where........
Please just keep these people in your prayers, because they are in for a very long road ahead.
