The same asinine reason that USC claims a national title in 2003 after they beat an average Michigan team in the Rose Bowl, while the real #1 and #2 were battling it out in NOLA.
ETA: But, in reality, USC probably should have gotten the nod over Oklahoma, since OU had lost their conference championship.

No, if you are the best team in the country, you pretty much have to be the best team in your state.
Bama lost to Auburn, more due to a Bama brain fart on not covering on what essentially turned out to be a kick off return.
Bama would beat Auburn 8 or 9 out of 10 times, but unfortunately, you only get one chance and Bama blew it. I still think Bama is the better team over all.
