What is a bigger penalty, having to vacate or forfeit 4 years worth of games or not being on TV (many back then had only 1 game a year was televised).
You wear the scarlett letter of a cheater in the record books for all time. Auburn missed out on TV.

quote:It is odd that Auburn was put on probation in 57 for 3 years and then a year later was again given 3 years probation.
you are double dipping your counts. for instance 57 and 58. I see why, but you have to know the actual specifics of the violations.
So, if we take away one of the 3 years of probation, say 1958, (under the assumption that the NCAA goofed up), Auburn would still have 12 years of probation instead of 15. Is that right?

Allin, I was just answering your statement about Bama being more penalized than Auburn....
In terms of the NCAA giving more years of probation, more TV bans and more postseason (no bowl games), Auburn is more penalized than Alabama.

Actually your statement is not factual... We have had the most probation, but not the most penalized...

Who gives a shite? We are all free, clear, and clean as a virgins honey pot in the eye's of the NCAA today.

The Probations ran concurrently (57 and 58 were basically ONE case), the NCAA operated differently back then. No public report exist for those year for the Auburn case, but do for other cases from that year. There was no process, Auburn always felt that we did nothing wrong.
Also 79 and 80 (no new sanctions).
From the 1980 Public Report --
After reviewing further information regarding the university's football program, the Committee
on Infractions found that several additional violations had occurred......................
No sanctions were imposed in conjunction with the new penalty, and the sanctions imposed in
1979 to prohibit appearances on NCAA-controlled football telecasts or participation in
postseason football bowl games will be permitted to expire under the terms of the original
penalty on April 24, 1981.

79 and 80 as well
So you're saying that the NCAA put up two different accounts for one penalty (Actually twice for Auburn; 57 & 58; 79 & 80)?
Institution: Auburn University
Date: May 11, 1979
Violation Sumary: Extra benefits; improper recruiting contacts, entertainment, inducements, lodging, publicity and transportation; excessive number of official visits; tryouts; questionable practice; certification of compliance.
Penalty Summary: Show cause why more penalties should not be imposed if institution does not disassociate four representatives from recruiting. MEN'S BASKETBALL: one-year postseason ban; one-year television ban. FOOTBALL: two-year postseason ban; two-year television ban.

But you omit, Forfeits and Vacated Victories, c.... Alabama has had to wipe 4 years off the record books, that to me is much more severve than any penalties Auburn has ever faced.
Many of our penalities had little effect because in 57 and 58 many teams turned down bowl games and few if any were on TV. I just remember Alabama being penalized very hard (lots of screaming from Bama Fan)..
Penalities changed over time, TV bans no longer happen because they make too much money and damage other schools and conferences, you will never see them again...
ETA: We never had a "Staring down the Barrel of the Death Penalty" statement or punishment.

Read the 1980 Report, no new penalties...... No reports in 57 and 58...
ETA: Not saying we did not deserve probation, penalties, etc... All I am saying is the total number does not tell the whole story. 7 parking tickets does not equal 7 DUIs...

quote:Actually the first sentence of the report you linked, says that the probation given in 1979 was extended in 1980 for a period of one year.
Also 79 and 80 (no new sanctions).
quote:The NCAA is confusing as frick.
AUBURN UNIVERSITY PENALTY EXTENDED BY NCAA
MISSION, KANSAS--Auburn University, which was placed on probation for two years by the
NCAA in April 1979 for violations occurring in the con-duct of its intercollegiate football
program, has had its probationary period extended by the NCAA Committee on Infractions.
After reviewing further information regarding the university's football program, the Committee
on Infractions found that several additional violations had occurred and imposed a one-year
probationary period on the university effective November 2, 1980. The additional penalty will
expire November 2, 1981.
So take away that 1 year also, and now Auburn is 11 years to Alabama's 10.

That said, there was no way the NCAA was going to do that. It was big talk. All hat, no cattle, type of statement. Everyone knows that was a hollow threat. SEC wouldn't have allowed it.
