Reed has happy feet and bails on the pocket as soon as the ball is snapped running backwards because he doesn't trust the OL. He is in his head too much.

100 percent agree.
The only thing working right now is running the ball. Either the RBs or the QB. The offense gets momentum with those things. Then Wiggins inexplicably calls random pass plays where the OL is on their heels, waiting through five Marcel Reed hand claps, they they go backwards…
It doesn’t have to be this way with the players available.

Can't wait to see Kane's brilliant game plan tomorrow to stop him

I believe Elko felt that an outsider represented a disruption in the momentum from last season.
It’s not “he’s loyal”… but the idea was continuity. Keeping the same offense, same language, etc. Plus he is a fantastic recruiter and the players love him.
Elko somehow convinced himself that Wiggins had the exposure to and knowledge of playcalling… when he clearly was not ready.
I agree with your assessment. Blunder by Elko to believe the benefits Outweighed the risks.

If Elko went and identified several people and the boosters said no I get it, but otherwise that’s a dumb move
The shine is definitely coming off of Elko. He has been getting benefit of the doubt but an embarrassing loss tomorrow and he may lose the fans.

I’ll add that there would have been little to no pushback from the boosters if Elko decided to hire an experienced playcaller as OC.
But maybe Elko feared defections, as is common in this transfer portal era…
It backfired spectacularly.
