I turned 14 that year. It was nice, we had cell phones and the internet but they didn't control our life like they do now. And the world hadn't gone full retard yet.
I remember 1998 vividly, I was in college, and nobody I knew had cell phones. I knew one guy with a cell phone and it was his dad's company phone, his dad never used it so gave it to his son. It had the antenna that you have to pull out.
Where and how did you grow up that you had a cell phone at age 14 in 1998?

Cell phones were becoming a thing but they were still a major novelty item. My mom had a cell phone and so did my grandmother. I was more excited about cordless phones at that age because that meant I could take the phone into my room and talk to my friends or girls rather than be forced to talk to them in the kitchen or my parents' bedroom. You could do that with a cell phone obviously but back then the charges for calls that lasted more than a certain amount of time were absolutely through the roof.
We didn't really have a computer at that time so I spent the majority of my time outside playing with neighborhood kids when I wasn't doing homework or chores.

My first cell was when I started driving in 2001, so someone having one 3 years prior isn't too far fetched. I'm betting it was a clunky block looking Motorola brick

I got my first cell phone in 2000 and I just remember that it felt really small in my hand but the antennae was like 3 feet long.

A 14 year old having one three years prior? And using the term "we" to imply many of his peers had them? That's what isn't adding up for me.

I didn't say I had a cell phone then.

That came later on. My parents each had a Fujitsu F80P they got from Macy's in the mid 90s.

I was 24. I remember my freshman year 93 thinking 1980 sounded like ANCIENT history. Now…..13 years seems like a blip.

40 years exactly according to my math. 1981 to 2021 right?
The OP is clearly highlighting our NC year.
Not winning an SEC title for 25 years is pathetic and should put Tennessee up for Big 6 relegation. That would be the equivalent of something last happening in 1973 back in 1998.

I pity my kids for not knowing such a world.

Yeah, unfortunately, I was old in '98 ... over the hill, half my life gone.
frickit ... those chaps will never know what a sweet American life they missed.
