Seriously, though, any single college ranking number is meaningless taken by itself.
The Univ of Alabama has been very much in a growth mode for several years now. There is a huge influx of out-of-state students who are paying double - particularly from Texas and Illinois - so the university welcomes them with open arms. Our average incoming ACT and SAT scores remain very competitive and program rankings in many areas are solid.
LSU's acceptance is at 75% with LOWER average ACT scores compared to Bama. What does this tell us? Basically, it tells us that you can probably group many universities into tiers and slight differences are meaningless.
Particularly given the degree of specialization. Want to major in Petroleum Engineering? No doubt that LSU would be a better choice. Law? Business? You'd probably be a lot better off at Alabama. You could pick any number of comparisons for many of the SEC schools.
On top of ALL THAT... then you have to consider politics. Take Ole Miss and Miss St. - they are required by state law to accept students on the same basis as schools such as Delta State, Alcorn State, Southern Miss, etc. This hammers them in the rankings every year, though perhaps it is unfair. Then you can even further modify that by state funding imbalances. Consider the mission and majors mix of the school as well - Alabama has traditionally turned out a lot of teachers and nurses, who have far lower starting salaries on average. That's not at all a bad thing, but it is not always reflected positively in the salary numbers.
The bottom line is that you ought to take all this rankings BS with a skeptical eye - no small number of criteria is ever going to tell the full story. The ultimate measure is how much YOU learned and how well you did with that knowledge. Go talk to graduates and see the facilities. BTW, my degree is in Applied Physics from Bama and I like to think I turned out OK salary and success-wise. Better than the average Joe, probably.
