I hear stories about Sonny Collins
Not sure if you've ever heard of this fellow, but since we are 'waxing nostalgic' Darryl Bishop is worth mentioning, since among other reasons he played in this game.
Bishop was a DB signed by John Ray and a great athlete. In his sophomore year he had a pick 6 to beat Vanderbilt in a way only Vanderbilt could lose. The two were tied 7-7 with time running out and Vandy had the ball after a punt. Vandy handed off to seemingly run out the clock but then thought better of it on second down. Vandy's Steve Burger, a great athlete himself who played on some of Vandy's baseball teams in the early 70's, threw a wounded duck to basically no one, except Bishop. Bishop ran the pass back for a TD as time ran out. To add insult to injury, rules at the time had UK kick a meaningless extra point to win,14-7.
The following year he had a pick 6 vs State in Lexington, this one 97 yards as UK won 17-13. In this game (this 1973 one) he picked one off at the goal line at half time (very similar if you watched this past MNF game with the NYG) and was drug down at the State 8 by Felker.
He was also a walk-on, along with Elmore Stephens on the Kentucky 1971-1972 basketball team, Coach Rupp's last. Having scored six points against Vanderbilt in football, he scored six points against them in basketball in a 106-80 rout.

I too appreciate these type of stories as I am hear to learn the ways of my new SEC compatriots.
My question is how did a good southern boy like Murray Warmath get enticed to leave State go coach at some Yankee school?

In all the areas I worked in my career I’d have to rank Perry County as the bad arse capital of the world. I don’t know if they were as tough as they looked because I was smart enough not to test the theory. Hazard wasn’t far from Viper. I would stay up there at the Daniel Boone motel. Halloween in that area was pretty rough. They would drop a tree across the road in front of you and when you stopped drop one behind you. But when you made a friend you had a friend for life.

Yep I've heard of Daryl Bishop. Never saw him play since I wasn't born until 78 but he still holds the Kentucky record for most interceptions at 14.
The question came up after the Vandy game this year when our corner returned two INTs for a TD
