1971 Bama and Bear's Renaissance Computer glitches took this much longer than I meant to plus I kept stumbling on more off the wall things.

If you are one of those who asks for "Cliff Notes" after a three paragraph post, do not attempt to read this . You will hate it.But if you're a Tide fan or SEC junkie, you may find this interesting.

A few things I came across in this:

* Sam Cunningham's game in the previous year and supposed aftermath wasn't in reality quite like its been portrayed

* another player was Alabama's first black commitment before Wilbur Jackson

* another black player, Paul Gipson ,statistically did more damage vs SEC teams than Cunningham did

* you won't believe what ABC showed the night of the '71 Alabama-Southern Cal game.

I'm sure I'll take a hit on this but I loved the white helmets.

It probably has something to do with the fact that the first games I can remember were the Perkins' years.

I like them with the away uniforms. I wouldn't mind seeing them again. Even if only for 1 or 2 games a season.. like Tenn and Au.

I grew up watching Bama, Oklahoma and Texas run the wishbone. Of course, back in the day, those teams plus Southern Cal, Michigan and tOSU were the only teams on TV.

Love me the wishbone. It's a really fun offense to watch.

That Cunningham story was a complete fabrication from the start. That same Bama team went to L.A. the next year and kicked USC's butt. Not much is said about that, for some reason.

someone correct me if wrong, but bama really only wore the white helmets against teams with red helmets... like USC and OU in the photos on the link.

What they would look like today. So badass looking, wish we would break these out at least on the occasion.

But you can't tell a Southern Cal fan that.

my father was a HS head coach and he and his staff went and spent time with Bear and his staff learning the wishbone in the mid-70's...

One of my most valued possessions is about 40 pages of Alabama's playbook from the 70's that my father had gotten from them
