Depends on when in the season they play LSU and Alabama and a few other teams.
Clemson dragged in their first few games. Could easily have lost to UGA or Florida if they played like they did against North Carolina.
I think They lose a shootout to LSU early in the year before the Defense got its act together.
Same with Bama if they play them with Tua.
They beat Bama without Tua.

Funny because Coach O attributed it to Joe Burrow missing some throws. Then said give credit to Alabama, they came back and were a Championship quality football team.
But sure, Coach O told Burrow to fumble the ball on the 1st possession out of the half.
Then on the next possession, he told your RB to only pick up 6 of the 7 yards he needed on 3rd down, after he'd already caught 2 passes for 25 yards on the drive.
Told Burrow to throw an incomplete pass on 3rd and 4 the drive after that.
Dumbass LSU fan.

Even if LSU slowed down offensively and blew some coverages, Alabama still had to make the plays and they did.

If you're just talking defense and ignoring the 2x Pick 6s, then yes. Auburn scored 48 against Alabama.
Alabama's D had several chances to close the door on Auburn and their True Freshman QB nicknamed Bo Pix in the Iron Bowl and didn't do it.
Good defenses would have done that. Alabama had the third best defense in the SEC West last year from my eye-ball test actually watching games, 4th best in the conference.
Getting back to the question that had me chime in: would 2019 Alabama have been able to beat 2019 Clemson? Maybe, but I doubt it. Clemson returned pretty much everyone on the offensive side of the ball from the team that put up 44 on Alabama in the CFP title game.
And SP+ is a garbage arse metric. Ohio State is the final overall #1 by SP+ for 2019.

The SP+ is a power metric, not a ranking tool.
What it really says is Ohio St had the #4 offense and the #2 defense, and the 21st best ST. That all added up to be higher than anyone else.
LSU had the #1 offense, but their defense ranked all the way down to #20, which is what killed them. And that's not surprising because we all know LSU's defense struggled for the majority of the season. That's why they are #2.
Alabama had the #3 defense and the #2 offense, but the special teams was a horrible 89th.
Clemson was similiar with ST, but came in #4 defense(nearly tied with Alabama), #5 offense and the 84th ST's.
Georgia had the #1 defense, but your offense is shite and ranked way down in 32nd. Also had the #1 ST.
All of that is basically consistent with what we saw last year.

Clemson's offense could have kept them in the game and with Clemson's offensive balance, I don't see how Alabama's LB corps can cheat to help out the secondary. They'd have to honor the ground threat from Clemson, and that is how Auburn and LSU showed how to beat Alabama.

We could just use the previous year when Tua played a Clemson team that featured an even better defense including a defensive line that all got drafted to the NFL.

I prefer the spread, but I have to wonder if teams will move away from the spread to protect QBs eventually. Even with all the rules, they are much more exposed than in pro-style. Idk if there's data to back this up though.
