But you are right that Mullen may have made his mind up after the 2017 Bama game to move on.

Mullen made his mind up to leave State the day he got the job. He took the first decent opportunity he got to leave.

100%. He knew that not winning in ‘17 meant he would probably never beat them. That was the best team he had and if he couldn’t get it done with them it would never happen.

He was in the phone with UT later that week asking for the job. Would’ve gone there if UF hadn’t come in and offered.

I do wonder if he regrets keeping the pts on the board instead of taking the penalty for running into the kicker and going for it on 4th and 1

I don’t know the game in question. Are you saying taking the penalty would’ve left State with 4th and 1? If so, I can’t imagine many coaches taking points off the board for any penalty that doesn’t result in a first down.

Idk, Mullen's stock was probably higher in 2014 when Florida fired Muschamp, and he had more head coaching experience than McElwain

That game ripped my heart out. I think it’s why Mullen left too. It just took the wind out of him and I feel he realized he just couldn’t get us to the next level even though he had greatly improved our program
