Watching this now since I missed most of it back then and definitely worth it, this game has it all:
- Classic upset scenario, environment must've been among the best in State's history.
- Mullen's mad scientist offense full of 2 and 3 stars chugging downfield and eating clock, Nick Fitzgerald even made some plays with his arm (missed some too). Yeah I know Bama was missing four LBs (even played a white guy), but still
- Calvin Ridley going crazy. One of the best performances by a WR I've seen in recent memory
- the 3rd and Grantham that ended State's chances
- This would've been Mullen's first real marquee win of his tenure there (they whipped LSU that year, but we finished 9-4), does he stay if MSU had pulled it out?

We couldn't get them off the field. They just kept getting 3-4 yards on every play. We finally found something running wide in the 2nd half and got a couple big stops to give us a chance.

It was a sign of things to come against Auburn between our broken down front 7 and Jalen's issues.

Should have won that game. Hurt worse than any loss in recent memory.

Yeah I like Jalen, but Bama's offense with him vs with Tua was 64-bit vs 1080p. He did run with incredible fluidity and vision though, better than a lot of starting RBs I'd say. He will be great in a Taysom Hill type role if that's what the Eagles decide on

Yep, love him too. He's just not gonna be a drop back, scan and make a read kind of guy.

He has a very unique set of skills. I'm glad he went to a coach and team that will know how to creatively use them (much like Payton has done with T. Hill).

Now talk about the Calvin Ridley big play late in the game where he clearly ran out of bounds on his own then came back in and the refs conveniently forgot illegal touching existed.

Mullen never really beat a great team at State. But damn he won most all the games he was supposed to and most of the toss ups. Cat is a great coach

Yep, if you can do that at a historical second-tier SEC program, you're great. I do wonder if he regrets keeping the pts on the board instead of taking the penalty for running into the kicker and going for it on 4th and 1: 28-17 would've felt much different than 24-17

My biggest memory of that game is how awful Alabama backup linebacker Keith Holcombe was. He was forced into playing a ton (maybe even starting?) due to injuries.

If we'd stepped it up in cheating he could have.

I think y’all stepped up the cheating enough to produce some great teams. The likes of Chris Jones and Jeffrey Simmons has halls defense salty. Yall should have just spent a little more on offensive specialists

Probably true. Mullen just refused to fire his garbage best friends on the staff. Billy Gonzalez for example. Dude couldn’t recruit or coach. If he didn’t have Percy Harvin fall into his lap a hundred years ago he wouldn’t have a job

I blacked out by the end of this game. To date, I’ve never actually seen it. I don’t want to. I’d imagine it was the most classic State ending though.

It seemed liked Mullen could've gone for it on fourth a couple times to really tighten the screws on Bama if yall had converted. Your offense excels at short yardage anyway and you can't count on your defense shutting them down all game when they have Calvin Ridley and Devonta Smith.

That was the game that broke Mullen at MSU. He completely checked out and started begging for other jobs after that loss.

The 2014 losses to Bama and OM and the 2017 loss to Bama were the three worst losses of Mullen’s tenure (I don’t count the 2016 USA game as that was an upset and those happen every once in a while).

The 2017 Bama was a game we had in our grasp and let it get away.

The game plan was sound and worked but on the 3rd and Grantham we should have never blitzed. They were ready for it. Had we rushed 3-4 and dropped back in a zone I believe we would have stopped them. I knew just as soon as we blitzed it was over with.

And yes I agree there were a couple of 4th downs that we should have gone for it. When you are trying to beat a great team, you have to take a risk or two. Those would have been the opportunities to just that. If we had failed, so be it as we ended up losing anyway.

2015 Egg Bowl seemed bad too: it was a great UM team, but y'all had them at home and just didn't show up. I think Mullen might have stayed if y'all had won the 2017 Bama game though, that probably convinced him that he couldn't get past Bama if he stayed there

This game made me so mad. It’s what made a lot of fans start souring on Mullen as well.
He just did not know how to follow through on winning games like this.
He can get himself a lead but then doesn’t know how to coach correctly to maintain it.

The 2015 OM team was better than us. Simple as that. I hate admit that but they were the better team. Also, I do think the emotional game @ Arkansas the previous week (51-50 thriller) affected State some. The emotional aspect of that game took a lot out of State. I know the Egg Bowl is the rivalry game but it is hard to maintain that emotional high two weeks in a row.

But you are right that Mullen may have made his mind up after the 2017 Bama game to move on.
