Being in the SEC is way better.
The games, competition, atmosphere, gameday environments, TV coverage (more ESPN, SEC Network), more respect from the committee.
Games against Tennessee, LSU, Bama, etc are just great for college football.

I had always hoped for the PAC-12 or Big 10 for cultural fits and academic stigma respectively.
I’ve never understood this sentiment among a percentage of Texas fans. Maybe you aren’t from Texas originally but it is not a cultural fit with California, and certainly not with the Big 10.
Texas is not part of the Deep South, but I travel all over the country and the people in the original SEC country are more similar to Texans (and Oklahomans) than any other part of the country, and it’s not even close. Similar values, worth ethic, politics, and friendliness (except for up here on this site!). Not to mention some redneck.
The only other scenario that might’ve worked would have been a merger of the best of the Big 12 with best of the ACC. Texas, OU, Tech, Okie St, UNC, NC State, VT, FSU, Miami, GT, Clemson, and a couple others would’ve been a decent conference with cultural fit.
Anyway I’ve never understood why any Texas fan wanted to be in a conference w California and spanning 3 time zones.

Texas and Oklahoma certainly create more high profile games in the SEC but it's not great for college football in general.
At this point, I’m ready for college football to just go pro to the point they (re)make 6 to 8 balanced conferences with around 10 teams each that make geographic and traditional sense.

Outside of the traditional SEC footprint, what schools would balance well with Texas, A&M, and Oklahoma within their geographic region? Hint: there aren’t any. That fact explains a large majority of the conference instability that has plagued CFB the last 30 years.
