I have no idea what the SFA is but I really want a job there.

John T. Edge is a cool dude. Southern Studies class is awesome, but probably one the most coveted classes to get in during undergrad.
Eta: I only took Southern Studies 101 with Overby though, :(

Never heard of those Poke stuff and I think I'd have to pass on that poisonous stuff. Pretty cool video though.

weird coincidence on timing, my boss was telling me about this just a few weeks ago and he is from Water Valley also.... must be fairly common around there because I too had never heard of it

Common all over the south, just a generational thing. Something common for you parents or grandparents to eat in the era before chains and same food all over instead of local.

I took it with Ted Ownby. Dude's cool but clearly a 50-year-old stoner.
I really liked the course though. I think a lot of dumbasses sign up for it thinking it's going to be a bunch of KA Old South bullshite and are disappointed. I had classmates that were just stunned that we'd study things like the Native American tribes who first settled in the region, the role of religion in Southern politics and culture, Faulknerian short stories as metaphors of a Southern identity crisis, and all that other introspective, historical shite. "WHEN WE GONNA TALK ABOUT GETTYSBURG?!"
God, I hate Ole Miss students sometimes.

Pokeweed grows everywhere. I know I don't eat it, but I can't say that my mom didn't when she was a kid. She was the one who pointed it out to me. Called it "poke salad" when she was weeding it out of her zucchini plants.

Ownby... Overby... Close enough
. We actually covered the origins of southern rap right after a Light in August. That was a rather hilarious transition to say the least. Did you have to attend those brown bag lunch lectures? They were actually pretty damn informative I ended up going to just about all of them.
Also,
Also,

I saw some of this this morning by my house and picked a leaf off and tried it. It was pretty good.

We didn't have to attend all of them, but I do remember liking the ones I did attend.

What I mean is that people sign up for Southern Studies class thinking that they're going to watch Ken Burns documentaries and eat fried catfish while listening to Garth Brooks and having everyone verbally fellate the South and how awesome it is.
They're stunned to learn that it's - gasp - an actual objective look at Southern history, culture, and politics from many different perspectives.

We actually did eat catfish in class one day. Of course the class was at 12 so it was encouraged. It was honestly the most diverse class I've ever had the pleasure of taking. You won't ever find another class that blends kudzu with the effects of the religious souths shaping of the political landscape.
I knew what you were getting at, just wasn't wild about the example used.

Understood. I was just using Old South as an example of a glorification of the South as opposed to an actual objective study of it, and not picking on Old South in particular.

Fair enough.
Those same people that loved to worship Old South were conveniently in other fraternities and never had to deal with the negative aspects of it. Furthermore, the people in question were oddly not from traditionally southern states.
