Chandler Tuitt announcement coming soon.

I wasn't aware he has had multiple concussions already in his career. That's troubling.

He also said if the nickname Rebels is bothering anyone we should address it. It's only a matter of time.

So... to summarize - we have a unique nickname to honor our athletic department, contrary to the likes of "the bulldogs" or "the tigers", and way better than the likes of "volunteers". And there are also other schools that use this nickname, but we are the ones being singled out to change.

Our early country revolted against Britain because of oppression. Then we oppressed the Spanish, the French, the Mexicans, the Indians, the Africans, the African Americans, the Japanese, etc.

I'm just saying oppression, in general, is deeply rooted in our country and throughout all human history as well.

I'm sorry if ::insert any controversial topic:: offends you, but we don't by any means live in a utopian society. We live in the greatest country in the world but from time to time, some people are going to piss you off.

It's just difficult for anyone to make a dramatic change to their brand when it's been a staple of the organization for 100 years.

Minute Maid isn't changing its name and overall brand because it still today exploits illegal immigrants for the most physically strenuous work in the US, on top of horrific pay and no benefits.

The SEC is going to need mascot lobbyists in DC to keep half of our mascots due to origin (at least Ole Miss, LSU, and Tennessee).

I would think the Ole Miss rebels is synonymous with a unique Southern university experience, strong Greek life, football in the South, etc...things that are big draws for OOS kids. It works for and against Ole Miss

Maybe should abolish live mascots. I'm pretty sure PETA doesn't like LSU rolling out a tiger in a cage or UGA, UT, or A&M bringing their dogs out in 90º weather, surrounded by 90,000+ fans screaming at the top of their lungs for 4 hours.

And by the way no one mentions that the Volunteers fought to kick the Mexicans off their land.

Really, all the media cares about is stirring the pot. But, if we're going to be all PC, please take a good hard look all around and don't just put us under the microscope.

PETA drops in on LSU every few years to make its case, and I am sure we'll see the day where LSU won't have a live tiger on campus. Surprisingly the topic hasn't been brought up in a long time. I think it's fair to make LSU expand his cage at least. It's a very nice cage, sure, but it isn't exactly adequate roaming grounds for a tiger. The tigers LSU buys are probably far too domesticated anyways to really flourish in the wild

No topic offends me. I'm just saying when someone says "school xyz is also the rebels and they don't have to change their name" one should probably look into the context.

Mr. Simmons,

I am writing you as Sports Editor of the Orlando Sentinel.  This morning I opened my Orlando Sentinel hoping to get news from SEC Media Days in Hoover Alabama, since I knew my school’s coach appeared yesterday.  The media days is an opportunity to learn about the various teams, their schedules, their strengths, weaknesses and a bit of preview of what their season might look like.

Instead of getting that kind of sports information, on the front page of the sports section I see a political rant from Mike Bianchi regarding the name, nickname and flag of the State of Mississippi.  Bianchi has, on many previous occasions made his hatred for Ole Miss evident.  His obvious hatred for the University has skewed his ability to accurately report the ports.  How can you and your paper tolerate this kind of reporting?

I agree that the Mississippi flag should be changed… the University Chancellor, Athletic Director and head football coach have ALL emphatically made that claim… but that has nothing to do with a report from SEC Media Days.  Save that for his political ramblings.  His reporting from the SEC Media days is a disgrace to the Orlando Sentinel and the Tribune organization.  I would ask for an apology to the Ole Miss and SEC fans who might read your paper expecting something about sports and football in the upcoming season, but I know it would come with another slap in the face from Mr. Bianchi.

This message appears on the Ole Miss Spirit page:

Here is to all of those who want to turn Ole Miss into a racist term.  Show me evidence.  Here's mine.

In 1909 a dramatic change occurred. On the first full page of the yearbook for that year appeared a drawing of a train with the name “OLE MISS” written in white inside a circle on the train’s black-metal face. My earlier essay on W.C. Handy (here) documents that he would soon write about a train called “The Ole Miss” that ran from Memphis to New Orleans, transversing the entire length of Mississippi . It is the state of Mississippi that is clearly invoked in the name of that train.

In the 1909 yearbook, for the first time ever, the name Ole Miss was applied to the university as a whole  in the “ATHLETICS” section. That section opened with “FOOTBALL Yells” and “College Songs.” The second of the two football yells referred to Ole Miss in its opening lines: “Hurrah, ‘Ole Miss,’ we’ll raise a song to thee./ Hurrah, ‘Ole Miss’ we’ll ever loyal be;/ We’ll put aside all care today and join the Jubilee,/ While we shout for Mississippi.”

Hotty Toddy,

(Name Retracted)

Winter Park, FL
