But THEY told me we might "shock the world with the guy from Oklahoma" and McDowell was a 20 foot putt... While Clark was about a ten foot putt.

Well no-one used that terminology. We called it a "hand check". Every so often when we were on school trips that involved long bus rides the chaperones would come around and do a "hand check" to make us all show our hands to make sure we weren't fooling around.
It didn't work, but it was a good effort on their part.
