. . . now that MH Jr. is QB1, who moves up to QB2, Newbauer or Nui?

What the fricking frick.

Impressed it happened in the 1st quarter and nobody noticed..

We need to give Hawkins the benefit of the doubt vs. Texas. He showed flashes last year but was plagued by the same OL and WR issues JA faced.

I give y'all a lot of shite, but I am genuinely curious how y'all envision the offense when he returns. Do you think it will fundamentally change? It seems like there is a heavy reliance on the QB run currently, do you think Arbuckle is prepared to change it?

Do you think Sooner fans are happy that Mateer accounts for over 60% of the rushing yardage?

Of course we want the RB's to play a bigger part but so far they haven't managed to crack opposing defenses so its been the passing attack and Mateer's legs with some help from the defense.

This is who Mateer is and it won’t change. Injury had nothing to with running in fact it was a passing play.

We had 3 oline nursing ankles and everyone knows its harder to get leverage like that. We’ll be way more healthy vs tx. Ott has been nursing an injury and should be good as well. We have a key O and D player coming back too. And if Hawkins starts he is a diff QB than last year. Actually has coaching now

Even without coaching last year, he showed flashes of brilliance. With an actual QB coach, O-line and WR corps, I expect good things and not a massive drop-off.

It looks like he hit it off an Auburn defenders helmet in the first quarter. I'm just curious if you think Arbuckle will call less designed runs from the QB standpoint or have him throw the ball away more (or slide) to avoid a face mask to the thumb.

I think as the season moves on your offensive line will gel more which will help the run game. I'm just curious if you see the offensive scheme changing at all when he comes back to avoid aggravating the injury.

To answer my own question, QB2 is Whitt Newbauer, QB3 is 3rd Jett Niu.

Stoops' M.O. was to have an offensive gameplan & play set for the games leading up to the RRS, and have a new plan for RRS + going forward and I have to think Brent would follow suit. The problem there is our running game has been.. not great. Seems like we simply have to run Mateer.

It would be interesting to find out, but I doubt Mateer plays vs. Texas. If he does play, I don't want to see Mateer running many designed QB runs vs. Texas' D for fear of the point you make.

It was a fluke injury. You don’t change your offense to protect against fluke plays. Of course they will decide how his healing is but Hawkins is not the same qb as last year he had a great camp and could be sharing snaps if thumb is still a concern.

Hawkins is a perfect backup. Legacy player he does not want to transfer. Having went thru last year with no offense he learned under fire. Having an actual offense plus having a qb coach plus having an actual competent OC is a massive difference. If he needs to play he’ll be ready. We also get another few weapons back on offense which is going to stretch the field.

It was a fluke injury but as a coach, I'd err on the caution side. If it's not fully healed, he could aggravate that thumb a hundred different ways.

I agree. If he is not ready they will hold him out. If he is ready they will watch closely and likely bring in Hawkins if he’s off. There are many factors at play.

Anyone else see the similarity?

Baker-Murray
Mateer-Hawkins

Hawkins was trained by Kyler's dad also.

Toby said he "talked to someone" and feels confident Mateer will play vs. Texas. For what it's worth.
