If the male, as in your hypothetical situation, was the aggressor and confronted the female, then he would absolutely have no case for self defense.
If he was not the aggressor, he would have a hard time in court proving that he could not physically overpower the female and not be in a situation where he was in fear of great bodily harm/death assuming this female was smaller and weaker. Now, if the female was larger and stronger than him and was beating him for 45 seconds while he screamed for his life and help, then yes he would be well within his rights to exercise his right to self defense.
