Guys, I'm moving from God's Country (Oxford) to Mobile AL in the next month. Gotta a way better gig than what I'm doing in Oxford now. Can anyone point me in the direction to live? Best apartment communities for someone like me. I'm a 24 year old guy who graduated from Ole Miss a year ago.
Are you white? For AL this is an important question.

St Luke's has a high school now. St. Paul's old headmaster (Palmer Kennedy) left to start it. The high school is at the old Wright Academy on University

But yeah, St. Dominic's, St. Pius', St. Mary's, St. Ignatius, Corpus Christi, Little Flower...just tons of PK-8 Catholic schools.

It's not unique to Mobile to have so many private HS. Baton Rouge does too. New Orleans has a plethora. Remembering that Mobile is more Louisiana than Alabama has it all make sense.

Hmmmm.... Yeah. Nice try.

That's because Mobile was the original New Orleans.

So outside of the Spanish Villa suggestion are there any other apartments/condos that I could look into in the Midtown area? I'm not sure what constitutes as Midtown but I do have family there so I'm going to get them to show me around this weekend when I come down to begin browsing for places.

quote:Someone mentioned if you are planning on staying for at least a couple years, you should look into joining a Mardi Gras Society. It really is one of the best ways to network (both from a business standpoint and a social) quickly in Mobile. I think for most societies, new member applications are past due for this upcoming year. I guarantee some of your co-workers belong to a few, so after they get to know you I'm sure they'd vouch for you.

Get a copy of this book and you'll understand our history of Mardi Gras and why it's so important to Mobile. And again, if you plan to stay for a couple years, buy a set of tails for the Mardi Gras balls. Trust me, by year 2 you'll be saving money from the rental fees...plus you'll look badass in tails

quote:Spanish Villa is Springhill, but Mobile really isn't a huge city so it's close to Midtown. That complex just popped in my head because my friend just moved out of there. My best suggestion is to just walk/drive the streets in Midtown with you family members and stop by any place that interests you. You can use online services to help find places, but you never know what they are like until you visit

I plan on being there for as long as I can. Mobile seems to be growing and so does the firm I'm going to work for. Other than being transferred or god forbid being fired I plan being in Mobile for quite some time. I've heard getting involved with the Mardi Gras things is a great opportunity to meet people. I'll have to get into that. A couple of the younger guys I worked with last summer did that and they love it.
Thanks for all the tips and help everyone. Anything else I should know will be greatly appreciated.

Your best option might be to live your family that's in Mobile for like a month (if they're cool with that, have the space, etc). Work out an agreement with them...pay what the average apartment in the area costs for that month. It would give you time to get acclimated to the area and find an apartment/condo that suits you best...but living with family can backfire too, so be aware of that

I stay with my family (great aunt/uncle) last summer while I interned down there, they are old but very cool and fun for their age. I wouldn't mind doing that but I'd love to just do my own thing as soon as I got there. Plus I need a place to put all my stuff from my current house that I'll be moving out of.

Check Craigslist. I just looked for shits and giggles and saw a handful of decent looking places in Midtown.

I've looked. I'm just not familiar enough with the area to determine what is Midtown.

To reiterate a warning previously mentioned, the "atmosphere" declines precipitously north of Springhill Avenue and south of Government.
