I live in America and its fun.

My old man is a successful CEO and gets drunk nearly every weekend with his other successful friends at the nicest golf course in Memphis. It is obviously RUINING their lives.....

Money isn't the indicator of a successful life at all.

Do you enjoy it being around your drunk old man? Only he can answer why he needs to get drunk nearly every weekend. Why he needs to escape reality?

Could the answer to the question be 'to escape reality'?

For someone who grew up with none it is a pretty good one

Very much so. He goes from being pretty funny to being hilarious and opens up more. The shite talking we do about everything is damn entertaining.

He isn't escaping reality, he is just having a good time with friends. It is the same reason I drink with my friends.

To someone that seems miserable to be around like you then maybe.

Or to help relax and unwind after a long day that my more than legal self has worked for?

Or maybe I just like the taste of craft beers?

Did you laugh at that? If so then that is your answer, it's just funny. If not then you suck.

Oh, we could compare our lives growing up but it would be difficult to beat my 'poorness'. Little money but such a wonderful time in my life. I have much more money now but value relationships and friendships more than money.

Getting drunk isn't going to change anyone's situation other than eventually costing them much much more than money.

I think it's tragic. It's really an example of the basis of my original question.

Why would someone allow themselves to become like that? You see, there's much more to this person's life than being drunk, there are others who this is affecting.

Maybe it will, maybe it won't.

Were I you, I would resign my concern to those who you have a possibility of influencing. Being a self-righteous teetotaler will not do a damn thing.

Drunkenness ALWAYS has a high cost. Always.

I'm neither self-righteous nor a teetotaler. My curiosity was piqued by the 'i'm getting drunk and going to get drunker and boy did i get drunk last night and ha ha ha, i'm so drunk' posts that i see frequently on here.

Do you think seeing another person in such a state is funny? Why?

Your prescience is amazing and insightful.

You may not be a teetotaler, but you sure do seem self-righteous.

It's easier and more natural to laugh than to get indignant or upset.

No, it's not amazing, but it is insightful.

It didn't cost me more than $20 the other night, encouraged some good times with friends, and may have actually helped my health by reducing some stress.

So how did it have such a high cost for me then?

You're only placing a monetary value on it. It cost you your dignity, your relationships, your body.

Do you know what you did while you were drunk? Would you have done the same thing sober?
