Star Wars. Comic conventions always showcase some great Star Wars cosplay. The most popular characters from the franchise usually are Stormtroopers, Darth Vader, Jedi Knights and Princess Leia.

It changes. And anyway the ones most worth recognizing are the obscure perverted anime ones.
It's way too much to get into here but if you want to frick cosplay girls, get into obscure, sexually oriented anime.
try Konosuba.

High School dxd and Date a Live are both pretty nuts and perverted.
Final Fantasy games as well as a lot of Japanese RPG’s have lots of sexualized female characters popular with cosplayers like Tifa from FF7, Yuna from FFX, or Cindy from FF15
Obviously: Dragon Ball Z, Inuyasha, Naruto, Avatar: The Last Airbender, My Hero Academia, Full Metal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, Pokemon, Gundam, and Yu-Gi-Oh are your more mainstream animes.
As for Western Media characters, Star Wars and Trek, Tomb Raider, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Marvel/DC characters, Resident Evil, disney princesses, world of warcraft, etc.
One reason why Japanese games are so popular (besides how rediculously sexual their female characters are) is that Japanese RPGs typically don’t have much customization of characters. The games basically are like living out a cartoon or comic book. The characters are fully fleshed out and have clear identities. Your path is set, so the games have clearly defined story arcs and plots which you can’t venture away from much. You’re just along for the ride.
Western RPG’s are based on Dungeons and Dragons, where you make your own character. Western RPG’s are all about allowing you to play as yourself or anyone else, immerse yourself in a world, and make decisions that impact the course of a story. This personalized story and character is fun, but doesn’t leave much worth cosplaying as because the characters themselves are up to the player.
