I would fear letting a child walk a mile from home alone. You never know who they will run into.
I hate to see anyone go to jail so a stern talking to should be the first option.

I was walking that far from home when I was like 5 years old. I remember when my best friend got "arrested" for shoplifting some cheese at the gas station. I tried to tell him, but he wouldn't listen(and not just because he was deaf).
At the age of 10, I was riding my bike, horse and 4 wheelers much further. Lived in a rural area then, it was about 4 miles to the nearest gas station.
Probably one of the dumber things I did was when I was about 13, I got suspended from the bus and thought I could walk the 15 miles home easily. I remember planning how I was going to hide until the bus got there. My dad picked me up about a mile away from home 3 hours later very pissed.
At 14 I was driving to the store and other places, usually to pick up cigarettes for my mom. I had a motorcycle license, but never owned a motorcycle. It was just for ID in case I got pulled over by a state trooper.
Someone being arrested over this crap is just damn crazy to me. I'm glad have lived in the time span I've lived in rather than growing up in today's world.
Sometimes I wonder if warning labels aren't really so great.

Sounds like a wildly rural area if they're on 16 acres. That's like 8 house down.

The craziest thing I ever did was when I was in High School I went with some friends on a hunt for moonshine in Kentucky. You can imagine how that got over with the locals. One old couple threatened us. Just dumb on our part.
Did they not have any bad people where you lived?

Yuck, I don't know why you would want moonshine. Might as well just go buy everclear.

Yeah, but my parents were never that lucky.

man I guess I was in that same general universe, except I was the shoplifter, not my friend
maybe it was second grade when I actually walked home from school, but it was only half a mile maybe
At age 10 I started stealing candy bars. One store was between home and school, so not far, and the owner who caught me lived even closer to us than the grocery store. I begged him not to tell my dad.
Then, not learning my lesson, I started stealing candy bars at a store down the field from our church. Still 10 years old. I'd literally get out of church and walk down and steal candy bars. Got caught again, and again, somehow, the owner didn't tell my dad. I'm not sure how I ever got so lucky.
finally at age 13, I was stealing Playboys and Penthouses from the drug store magazine rack down town. I knew the young lady (no pics, she was probably 23) manning the counter at the old-fashioned soda bar, and all it took one day was one stern look from her as I was leaving and she knew I was walking out with a Playboy magazine stuffed in my clothes. Her gaze seared through my soul and I never stole anything again after that.
SOMEHOW my Dad never found out about any this, a ridiculously HUGE miracle, and I was never punished for any of it. The first store, I did later volunteer to stock groceries for free after a disaster happened in our town and people could not get to work.
ETA: I feel like I've told this story on here like 18 fricking times down through the years

The Georgia cops "F'd" this up big time.
They arrested her for not knowing where her 10 year old son was ........And the supposed law says the son has to be 10 .......
Then they charge her for a crime that doesn't exist. Reckless Endangerment.
My wife worked at an attorney's office in Florida. You cannot imagine the crap they got defendants off on because the law didn't exist. Cops are like game officials that can't carry a rule book with them on the field.
Something has to be wrong so I'll just make something up.

...Damn, my mom made me get on the roof and clean the gutters when i was that old.
1 story house with bushes to fall in, but it's how she was brought up.
She wasn't endangering me in the least. Unless she was a Christan that was homeschooling me so i couldnt be indoctrinated.

She wasn't off getting drunk....
I spent many summers clearing land and running barb wire fences around that age.
Getting to play with a flamethrower on burn piles has a way of motivating a kid.
