Calling the Germans german is really a bit of a misnomer. In other languages, including german, “german” is a big tent category that would include English. We should be calling them teutons or some anglicization of deutsch.

ETA: Teuton and deutsch are cognate even though teuton was the name of a Celtic tribe, not german. It was applied anachronistically by the Romans. They meet back up meaning “german” because the original proto-indoeuropean root meant “people” and the deutsch and teutons happened to call themselves the same name in different languages.

The Germans are being invaded and don't care. I really don't either.

The French, who used to be Frankish and claim a shared national founder figure with them, Charles the Great (Charlemagne), currently call them their kin to the east by the name one of their ancient Celtic ancestors called an ancient tribe of theirs they encountered (the Allemani).

Helvettii were a tribe that once started shite with the SPQR. They turned into what English speakers call "Switzerland" and their neighbors up north call "Der Schweiz". Most other names for this place use the "Helvette" based name.

A group of enterprising of Saxons once assimilated a community of Balts based around a river in Poland. These Saxons then took their version of these Balts' name of that river as their new identity. They've known we can't agree on what to them, and they're getting in on the fun themselves for quite a while.

Other languages/people seem to pick a specific subset of "the Germans" when naming them collectively, we went the Romans' geography name. At least it's better than the clusterfrick with the folks whose civilization arose around the Indus Rivers value versus the Navaho, Souix, Apache, Seminoles (Semen-hole if FSU fan), etc...

Alternatively, could go with German vs Germanic.
Like: Turkic (the big group) vs Turkish (the nationality).

Lol at the big delusion in this thread.

Most white americans are mutts, which does mean they are of mixed ancestry, there is no such thing as being "Irish-American", "british-American", "German-American" or whatever you which, 90% of "white americans" are big time mutts. but some of the truths are here:

80% of "white americans" are of predominantly English, Scotch-Irish, Ulster-Scots, Welsh or Irish Ancestry. When I mean predominantly is that at least 65-70%+ of their DNA/Ancestry comes from those lands. Now why I am grouping the British Isles Ethnicities with the Irish here, because you will have hard time to tell them apart by looks alone, genetically the Irish are not celts, neither the English are mostly "anglo-saxon"/Germanic , they all come mostly from the same substrata of "old-european" ancient britons, who are related to other atlantic european populations, they arent germanics by any means, neither they are celts, at least they have nothing to do with modern central-european celts either, they are culturally celtified/germanized native britons.

1)White americans who do 23andMe and other genetic test often come up with results being overhwelmingly british Isles/Ireland

2) White americans claim what is more recent and fancy, hence they ignore their english or British heritage and claim anything which sound more interesting.

3) Most white americans have also minor black african and hispanic/native american ancestry, also confirmed by dnam which also shows up in the way many white americans look like.

4) America counted as "german" any german speaker, half of them werent actually ethnic germans from germany, but alsatian/allemanic-french, swiss-german/amish, and from chekoslovakia, who are not really ethnic germans but german speakers, many of diasporas in eastern europe already mixed with the local populations. Let alone talking about german jews, many of those who had german names, spoke german, but genetically they are something else.
