There have been five upheavals over the past 450 million years when the environment on our planet has changed so dramatically that the majority of Earth's plant and animal species became extinct. After each mass extinction, evolution has slowly filled in the gaps with new species.

The sixth mass extinction is happening now, but this time the extinctions are not being caused by natural disasters; they are the work of humans. A team of researchers from Aarhus University and the University of Gothenburg has calculated that the extinctions are moving too rapidly for evolution to keep up.

If mammals diversify at their normal rates, it will still take them 5-7 million years to restore biodiversity to its level before modern humans evolved, and 3-5 million years just to reach current biodiversity levels, according to the analysis, which was published recently in the scientific journal, PNAS.

Maybe we can accelerate it through genetic engineering? Make some cool new animals.

Don't be stupid, they can't speed up the orbit of an entire planet. You think it's some kind of joke or something?

They are not speeding up the orbit of the planet. This has all been pre-planned.

Yes, we are, in our own way, an Extinction Event.

Not since cyanobacteria started pumping out oxygen (then lethal to just about everything else on the planet) 2 billion or so years ago has a species had such a dire effect on the environment and their fellow species.

We need to find that sweet spot of protecting the environment and the biosphere while filling the needs of our own species. Its a tough one because both extremes suck.

"frick the environment! There is no such thing as global warming or species going extinct!" Well, sooner or later that is going to bite us in the arse big time.

On the other hand, "We should go completely green and eschew all modern technology!" sounds nice but that can only support a human population of 1 billion people. The current human population is a wee bit more then that. Who here is going to volunteer to be the first to die?

We have to find that middle zone, hated by both extremes as they froth at the mouth and declare their beliefs are the one true faith, where we try to protect the biosphere while protecting our own species. Not an easy task.

No one has to be killed. All we have to do is to stop having babies willy nilly. Attrition will do the rest.

If it isn't voluntary, then it seems inevitable to me that someone is going to design and release a virus that inhibits human pregnancies. Or maybe there's a virus already out there that will do the same thing; we just haven't discovered it yet.

Zika has been around in Africa since the 1930s and only spread worldwide in the last few years. It could possibly be altered to prevent pregnancies instead of attacking the embryo in the womb.

We don’t need a virus. Just give the developing world plenty of hand soap, plastic ware, pesticides and women’s lib and their male fertility and birth rates will drop in a matter of half a century just as the first world’s has.

Regrettably, birth rates in Africa and the Middle East are in runaway mode, and South America is approaching that level. The populations of Mexico and Central America are also growing faster than their societies can provide sustenance.

That's why our southern border is being invaded by refugees from latin countries that have no interest in controlling and providing for their populations. As long as the U.S. serves as a relief valve for their population problems, they have no motivation to consider alternatives such as education or abortion.
