When you use it to describe an outspoken black person, yes it is a racist term.
Incorrect
The term means "self-important," or "arrogant." Do you see anything about race in there?
No, you don't.

I'm honestly really surprised that so many of you didn't know this.
White people can be uppity. Black people can be uppity. Martians can be uppity. The Na'vi can be uppity.
If you automatically think that it's racist because the uppity individual in question happens to be black, then YOU are the one viewing things through an overly racial prism.

I'm honestly surprised that you're the one taking umbrage to this while the black guy is wondering what the problem is

Did it ever don on either of you that people do know it was used at one point to describe African-Americans who didn't "know their place" but are "educated enough" to know that it no longer carries that connotation for most people?
Congrats on having a sense of vocabulary and usage that hasn't developed since the 60s.

Saying "uppity n_____" is racist.
Saying "uppity" is not racist.
The Wire is incorrect.

Some of you are just completely ignorant of American history.
It is astounding really. Most everyone here seems pretty well educated.
Everyone understands the historical context, but that context disappeared a when segregation ended. It's a universal term today.
Living in the past is why some people are so fricked up.

Then those people are ignorant. Obviously the word itself holds no racist connotations, but just because you don't understand the historical connotations to it, it doesn't remove those connotations. And it depends on the context of its use. There's going to be some backlash when black people are referred to as "uppity", like Rush Limbaugh did to Michelle Obama. Or the US Rep(forget his name) that used it to describe Barack Obama when he was running for President.
Nobody uses "sambo" as a racist term anymore, but if someone were to use it in reference to a black man, does that remove the racist connotations of the word from decades ago? Of course not.

Several people in this thread didn't know the history of the word, so yeah that's pretty ignorant.

What does gay mean to you? Years ago it meant happy, now it has a whole different connotation. Which connotation is relevant today?
