Took me 7 hours to drive 12 miles. Multiple fatal accidents, and countless others.

I've never seen our DOT fail this badly.

Thankfully...myself, wife and daughter are home safe. My son had to stay at school because he is unreachable, but he's well taken care of.

Ice is always a pain in the arse. Always.

It doesn't even take much. In really cold weather, all it may take is a couple of hours of freezing rain or snow and the roads are going to freeze.

Sorry, wrong board but yeah...an ice storm came on and caught our DOT completely off guard. It's tragic. Hundreds of people roaming the streets. Stranded. Who knows what else.

We had a similar situation in north-central Alabama (including Birmingham) on January 28, 2014. The whole month was cold and that day the high was only around 20 degrees. Snow had been forecasted, but was forecasted to be south of Birmingham. The placement of the snow was forecasted wrong and it snowed further to the north. The first bit of snow melted on the roads and then refroze, creating a layer of ice underneath the snow. Ended up being a significant ice event with thousands stranded, as it had happened in the middle of the day on a Tuesday and people were at work/school and were unprepared. It was a true civil emergency.

He is 7. He's with his friends, and his teacher (who is a fricking saint). It's not ideal. I want him home so bad, but it's far too dangerous to attempt to get him. His school is located in a valley, huge hills both ways to the school, and the roads are still completely iced over.

Supposed to warm up overnight, I'm going to try to get him at 5

Man. Never come to a complete stop on ice unless you absolutely have to. If I approach a stop light and no one is around, I am driving right through that fricker.

MODOT has become a joke.

About 10 years ago they started trying use beet juice instead of salt and it's been a disaster. I have no doubt they were caught completely unaware and had nothing pre-treated. What makes it worse is 95% of the time you can look across the river in southern Illinois and see clear roads.

I know they need a tax increase, but the leadership at MODOT has become staggeringly incompetent.

It also started 3 hours earlier than forecast so all the places planning to close ahead of it let their people out right when it hit.

That's tough, but better safe there than in danger.

But scientists can predict the weather, change in sea level and coast erosion and ice levels, 100 years from now. How could the weather do this to the DOT? Surely the climate change folks saw this coming with their excellent prediction models.

Did you get lost in east St Louis and have to ask for directions back to the highway?

Glad to hear you and yours are doing well. I hope you don't have to get out in this weather till things clear up.

How did they get so badly caught off guard? Its not like this cold front sneaked up on everyone after all.

Supposed to hit a high 0f 71 here today. Then a low of 25.

Yeah. Its going to suck.

Drove from west to city at 1 after it started melting, drove back just now.

Never seen anything like it.

Looks like a zombie apocalypse.

There might have 100 abandon cars on the side of the highway. What did they do? Get picked up by someone else?
