I mean we all joked about it, but I never ACTUALLY thought she was full blown dude down below. I figured she was intersex at birth or was receiving male hormone therapy but not a real life male with reproductive capability.

Griner's condition is probably very similar to that of Caster Semenya, the South African runner. She was born with a vagina and internal testes instead of a womb and ovaries.
If Griner does have internal gonads, it's possible she could have produced the sperm that fathered the twins. That's remarkably unusual.
Technically, she's a hermaphrodite despite not having the more common expression of both male and female external organs.
I can't imagine the personal conflict people born this way must endure.

So, I think they are just calling her a father in this instance instead of saying "parent" to give a legal parallel to what a typical father in this situation would be liable for. If some guy with low sperm count got married and agreed for his wife to give IVF, there is an implied amount of support to that child. I think that's what's being argued here. Not that they used Britney Griner's sperm.
