Found a diploma document belonging to my G grandfather who graduated from Ole Miss in 1881. The diploma, all in Latin, is for "Societas Phi Sigma" at University of Mississippi. The date of the document is the same date as the graduation on the baccalaureate diploma from Ole Miss so it must some honor society? I Googled it but came up with nothing.
TIA

It's what the campus Klan chapter gave to its members that made the Dean's List

Phi Sigma Society
Different Phi Sigma Society, probably. That one wasn't founded until 1915.

Thanks for the replies. I might try to contact this history dept or the archivist at Ole Miss to see if they can help.

Found a little info from the web:
"The Phi Sigma and Hermaean Societies are literary in their character, consisting of students meeting in the forenoon on Saturdays for the purpose of improvement in debate, declamation and composition."
"The Phi Sigma and Hermaean Societies have libraries containing in the aggregate, some twenty-five hundred volumes, which are accessible to the members."
"Each of the Literary Societies, the Hermaean and Phi Sigma, has prizes for excellence in elocution. The prizes consist of gold medals. The day of the prize declamation for Phi Sigma Society is the Saturday before Commencement".
