I am nervous about the timeline too. I have heard people say HBO knows how it is supposed to end and will be able to finish on their timeline.
I don't see it happening, but if that is the way it plays out that would be a huge slap in the face to readers who would know how it all plays out before he has published the final book.
Dragon tits just pisses me off as a character, she is finally catching some shite as of the 5th book but she better start getting her hands dirty in the next couple books if Martin wants her story to get turned around.

Yes, absolutely. I started reading the books after season one and, trust me, the books are better than the HBO series.

Any book will be better than the series, however if it were me I would read something else and wait until the books have been finished.
If you don't have any other reading on your plate then by all means start the series. Plenty of reread value in any decent fantasy series.

absolutely.
Probbly my favorite fantasy series, but I am waiting on the last book in the Kingkiller series for a final say.

HBO needs to do some condensing.
SPOILER ALERT:
Make Aeron/Victarion/Euron into one character, eliminate almost everything from Dorne except the Red Viper, cut out most of what goes on at Oldtown, find SOME way to make Dany's story interesting until the fighting pit scene, etc.
I actually think a lot of what goes on at King's Landing in AFFC will translate pretty well to the screen, even though it dragged on the page.
Night's Watch stuff is pretty eventful, it can stay untouched.
