It ain't too big a deal when they OD, just hit them with a shot of Narcan and they'll pop right up.

I've heard that combining coke with the dope is the best way to avoid it.

Ya, the white lady to bring you up and your boy a little later to take you all the way down. At least thats how the ragers I know do it. I am innocent.

The extent of my knowledge on the subject comes from reading about Chris Farley's death and watching Pulp Fiction.

I'm joking around here and I certainly don't inject myself with hardcore drugs (or any drugs for that matter) but unfortunately I do have a lot of close friends who went down that path.
And in regards to the actual question I know that there are drugs at every school, and I have traveled to a number of the other SEC schools and went out with friends who attended those universities. But I have never seen the drug culture as accepted and prevalent as it was in Tuscaloosa when compared to other college towns.
Certainly not saying that is good or bad, just my experience.

Interesting. I found it to be the same as most campuses and Bama's reputation to be very overblown.

On most campuses you have a shite ton who smoke and a much smaller % who do blow and pills. pretty much sums it up.
Posted on 6/11/13 at 1:55 pm to NIH
I am not really talking about smoking as that happens everywhere on campus.
I knew people (not me, but people i met through friends) who would order thousands of xanex (literally 2000 pills an order) and get rid of them in a week. Coke again is everywhere on almost all college campuses. But one thing I never saw at another college was people selling OC at a day party or in a bar. And towards the end of my college career there were even some people running herion up from bham to tuscaloosa because the whole OC shite really got a firm hold in ttown for a while. I think the cops did a good job cracking down on the main people but it was bad for a few years.
As I said I had a few friends who got into some serious shite without really realizing what they were getting into. It is scary how quickly shite like that can take a hold.

What years were you there? I noticed the OC thing start to creep in towards the end of my time there.
Posted on 6/11/13 at 2:02 pm to TreyAnastasio
I would say the OC really started to take a hold in 2009, but it was around my freshman year in 2007/2008.
By 2011 I think university police and TPD were focusing hard on it, but a surprising number of people died from OD over 2009-2011. A lot had gone home and were out of school because it is hard to be a dope fiend and get a college degree so you may not have heard about a lot of them.
I worked for the university after I graduated until mid 2012.

Ya, I finished and moved back home in may of 09.
My HS here is Cleveland had about an 18 month stretch when 8 graduates died from ODs.

Up in kentucky in and Ohio that shite was really bad. If you ever see the documentary Oxycontin Express (I think that is the name) check it out. Shows how all these pain clinics in Florida were just passing out pills, taking cash only, no insurance. People were getting 1000's of pills a month.
I think the stat was 90 or 95% of all OC prescriptions written in the US were written in Florida.
Ever since they quit making that form of OC, and the Florida state gov. put a statewide prescription tracking system in place Herion use has skyrocketed almost everywhere.

Note to self...become a drug dealer in Tuscaloosa.

You won't have much trouble getting rid of your stash that is for sure. Watch out for that spring cleaning though.

The thing I've noticed about Alabama is how open so many of the students are about it. At Auburn, it's all kept behind closed doors for the most part and rarely discussed in anything resembling a public setting. It's here, but it's a lot more subtle.
Posted on 6/11/13 at 2:24 pm to 15sammy34
Thats also why its so much easier here to get caught.
Posted on 6/11/13 at 2:25 pm to 15sammy34
That is what I was kind of getting at with the accepted thing at Alabama. Nobody is really surprised to open a door and see someone cutting out a bunch of lines of coke, or crushing up some xanex or OC or whatever. You get adjusted to it real quick during freshman year.
Not to mention the day parties where it seems like 75% of the attendees are tripping their balls off. But I feel like that happens a lot of places.

Top tier:
Alabama - has the strongest drug culture of any school in the SEC
Ole Miss - lot of $$$
Tennessee - Chattanooga kids alone...
Second tier:
LSU - Cajuns, Mardi Gras culture
UGA - best nightlife in SEC
USC - big bar scene, lot of drugs
The rest I see as roughly equal. Living in Charleston, we get a lot of grads from every school (except Ark, A&M, Mizzou) so it's been easy to compare.

This is a huge generalization to say the least, but on the whole, Auburn and Alabama attract slightly different types of students. Or it has always seemed that way to me anyway. And the difference in the general culture is why you see a difference in the attitudes and openess about drugs between the two schools.
An anecdotal example: I've never had a random person I didn't know ask for or offer coke in Auburn. It's happened two of the last three times I've ventured over to Tuscaloosa.
