First rap I remember hearing was Sugar Hill Gangs "Rappers Delight" at it was unique. My problem with later rap is media executives looked at costs to put say Earth, Wind, and Fire on the road (at least 2, maybe 3 buses) and not thinking that includes roadies. Later rap could be pared down to a single performer and no band.
Much less cost for equal or more money and it was a corporate guys wet dream. Rap went downhill for me after that.
