Decent. But not really better than anything on Southeastern or Something More than Free, or even Nashville Sound.

I'll listen to the rest this week. Thanks for the heads up, Dudley.

Yeah. I tend to agree. The album is exactly what I said. Solid. 8 or 9 good songs.

Southeastern and SMTF had a few each songs that were next-level good. Reunions has good songs, nothing wrong with them. “Only Children“ is the only song in this album that fits into premier Isbell tier.

The songs in the premier Isbell tier are:

Outfit
Goddamn Lonely Love
Dress Blues
Streetlights
Alabama Pines
Cover Me Up
Elephant
Relatively Easy
24 Frames
Something More than Free
Speed Trap Town
Last of my Kind
If We Were Vampires
Only Children

Like I said, there are usually 2-3 of these an album. This time there was only one IMO. Maybe Dreamsicle fits in there.

As a father, “Letting You Go” might be your favorite.

Overall I liked it. I think I’m just glad it wasn’t a full on skyscreamer.

This is how I would rank Isbell’s albums now:

1. Southeastern
2. Here We Rest
3. Something More Than Free
4. Reunions
5. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
6. The Nashville Sound
7. Sirens of the Ditch

Pretty good list of Isbell songs. I’d throw in The Life You Chose and Decoration Day as top tier. The Life You Chose maybe more so for me than anyone else. It was seared into my brain during a particular time in my life.

Thanks for giving me a new iTunes playlist.

I’ll give Only Children and Letting You Go a listen today.

Another incredible work of lyricism by Josh Ritter.

Lantern (Live)

(Best lyrics in bold)

quote:

It's a hungry world out there
Even the wind will take a bite
I can feel the world circling
Sniffing round me in the night
And the lost sheep grow teeth
Forsake the lambs and lie with the lions

And the living is desperate
Precarious and mean
And getting by is so hard
That even the rocks are picked clean
And the bones of small contention
Are the only food the hungry find

I'll need light for my lantern, light for my lantern tonight
Light in my lantern, light in my lantern tonight

Where the thistles eat the thorns
And the roses have no chance
And it ain't no wonder that the babies
Come out crying in advance

And the children look for shelter
In the hollow of some lonesome cheek

And the sky's so cold and clear
The stars might stick you where you stand
And you're only glad it's dark 'cause
You might see the master's hand
You might cast around forever
And never find the peace you seek

I need light for my lantern, light for my lantern tonight
Be the light in my lantern, the light of my lantern tonight

For every cry in the night
Somebody says, have faith
Be content inside your questions
Minotaurs inside a maze
Tell me what's the point of light
That you have to strike a match to find?

So throw away those lamentations
We both know them all too well
If there's a book of Jubilations
We'll have to write it for ourselves

So come and lie beside me darling
And let's write it while we still got time

So if you got a light, hold it high for me
I need it bad tonight, hold it high for me
Cause I'm face to face, hold it high for me
In that lonesome place, hold it high for me
With all the hurt that I've done, hold it high for me
That can't be undone, hold it high for me
Light and guide me through, hold it high for me
I'll do the same for you, hold it high for me

Best songwriter under 50 IMO

I think I found a Josh Ritter song you might like.

He wrote this in college: Golden Age of Radio

I wonder why people don't search over internet for a best music? Also YouTube is the best source to find.
