Radiolab did a podcast about this.

Some region in Nebraska or Kansas was having NYC sediment left over from water treatment shipped to them and used as fertilizer. No scent and production from the fertilized fields went up.

According to the article the Birmingham area is attracting flies and, at times, smells like rotting dead things. I hope the Gumps aren't farming their landfills.
