You asked for advice... and, based on what you said, it sounds like a scam

That, or a really shitty company to work for. There are hundreds of ways companies can screen applicants from out of the area without bringing them to their home city. Tests can done online, or via contracted testing centers. Interviews can be done over the phone or via the internet on Skype or Google Hangout.

I wouldn't waste any money traveling somewhere for a job opportunity if I wasn't assured I was a finalist for the position, and even then it'd be a stretch.

I'm in the same boat. Interviewing for a job in Columbus for a medical sales position and am nervous to how the whole "interview process" goes. I don't want to tell my employer I'm interviewing, because it could get awkward in the office (small office). Medical sales jobs are extremely competitive, so there is a solid chance I don't get it.

High-risk/high-reward kind of thing, but am unsure of how to tackle it.

It's not a scam. Probably just a low level job. The company has a lot of applicants and doesn't need to pay for their travel. They can probably get a good candidate locally anyway.

If OP had 5+ years of relevant experience and they were asking him to pay for travel that would be shitty.

I've done long distance applications, and if they are actually interested they will pay your way.

And part of the application is an agreement that I have to pay for my own travel.

WHAT? Are they testing your intelligence or something? No way do you pay your own way for a job interview. Nicht.

So they want you to pay for multiple trips to NY without an offer and............

The actual requirements they list are rather simple (relevant 4 year degree, under 32, etc)

they openly admit age discrimination?

but it definitely Is a highly respectable organization with excellent benefits.

I doubt that.
